JAY BECKER ~~ (Top Record-Holder in Masters' Individual Championship Play) Fast dealer. East-West vulnerable. 99754 o--- hI71543 Opening lead - king of epades. Bridge is nota lazy man's You have to take timé out occasionally to think. To. play mechanically and without thought is bound to lead to poor. results. i Take this hand where South |got to five diamonds doubled, |West led the king of spades and continued with a spade which declarer ruffed. After forcing jout the ace of trumps, South jhad an easy time making eleven, itricks; his club loser went on |dummy's fourth heart. | But the contract should have |gone down one. East should |have overtaken the spade |with the ace and led the king of clubs. Had he done this, |South would have been defeated, |for he would have had no way of avoiding a club loser. Actually, this was not a dif- \ficult play to make. The only, |thing hard about the play is to overcome the natural reluctance to waste an ace on partner's king. | However, @ little thought should convince East that the |right play is to overtake the jking. There are a sufficient |number of clues to be gathered from the bidding, the opening lead and the appearance of dummy's hearts to persuade |East of the need for a prompt |shift to clubs. West's spade raise must have been made with either three four or five spades. If West has five spades, no harm can |ecome from playing the ace, |since declarer is void of the suit. Similarly, if West has four spades, South has one, and East can easily afford to play the ace in order to make the vital club. shift. Even if West has only three spades, the ace play does no harm. That is because West is marked by the opening lead with the queen of spades as well as the king. (If West originally had the K-9-2, he would lead the deuce. With the K-Q-2, he would lead the king.) All signs point clearly in one |airection. East must overtake the king with the ace. CASPER ENTERS OPEN MONTREAL (CP)--Billy Case per, United States Open cham- pion, top money winner and player of the year in 1966, has added his name to the list of competitors for the $200,000 Ca« nadian Open golf champion. ship, to be held here June 29- July 2, it was announced Thursday. Casper, golf's second highest all-time money winner, will be looking for his first vie- tory in the Canadian Open after posting 33 official titles. SALLY'S SALLIES YOUR HEALTH Dear Dr. Molner: What is cervical arthritis? Does it af- fect head, neck and spine and make one dizzy or light-headed? Or even heavy-headed? Does it lead to senility or crippling? What medication or treatment is preferred?--A. A. G, It isn't a particular kind of arthritis. It can be any form which affects the cervical area, that is, the vertebrae of the neck. Usually it is the ordinary degenerative arthritis, or osteo- arthritis, so often found in older people. It may at times be rheumatoid arthritis which can attack at any age but is more likely in younger people. It can be gouty arthritis, although in that instance it will generally have made its presence known elsewhere in the body first, often in the joint of the big toe. Which ever type of arthritis it may be, when these joints in the neck spine are affected, it can cause stiffness and-or pain, and in addition can exert pres- sure on various nerves which emanate from that part of the spine, particularly those to the hands. Cervical Arthritis By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD which causes crippling in the sense of deforming or prevent- ing movement of other parts of the body, and it does not cause senility in the sense of interfer- ing with thought processes. We must adm:i, however, that cer- tain joint disorders commonly are a part of the normal pro- cess of growing old--but let's not confuse aging with what we usually imply with the word senility. Treatment varies. The salicy- lates--aspirin-type--are by far the most widely used and do the most total good. If the neck is painful, the muscle spasm and tension make the whole situation worse, and muscle re- laxants may be used to relieve this part of the problem. Neck traction also can be useful, depending on the pre- cise nature of symptoms, that is, indications of pressure on nerves. In some cases a head halter device, used periodically to draw the bones a little bit apart, may give welcome re- lief. And some cases may re- be 4 haow youve set @ doge eitter, but they are really just babies." my head and am afraid it may cause brain damage.--C. R. It will not damage the brain in any way. Some people notice a brief head pain, sense of full- ness, or "slight dizziness with this drug, but it passes quickly and does no harm. Dear Dr. Molner: A _ few months ago you said something about drinking milk. I don't remember the details but some- thing about an adult not drink- ing more than three glasses a day as it could cause some malfunction and too much ¢al- cium. Then recently you say the body will discharge any ex- cess calcium. I would appreci- ate your explanation of these opposite statements.--B. B. That's easy. Your memory slipped a cog, because I have never said anything about any special amount of milk being too much. It is true that some people cannot tolerate much milk or milk products, but quire splinting of the neck, that|/that is an abnormal condition is, the use of a thick collar. It/although not all depends on the severity, of Giddiness can occur, espe- cially when bending the head back and looking up. It may or shoulders, arms or even hands, depending on what nerves are pinched--if any. y But it is not the*éort of thing course. Dear Dr. Molner: I take ni may not cause referred pain in|trogiycerine for a heart condi: tion, but don't take a table especially rare. Those folks, to keep their diges- tive tracts comfortable, . must limit the milk they consume -land get their calcium from other sources. Some adults with calcium kidney stones may "nave to limit the amount of every night because in a few/milk they use because of 'its seconds I get a alight pain in'calcium content.
