16A THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, April 28, 1967 Rejuvenated Window Sills With Laminated Plastic Window sills, prominent as they are in the home, seldom look their best. The paint be- comes faded due to exposure, water sweeps into open win- dows when it rains and blisters the paint, while moisture from condensation drips onto the sills from the glass, leaving muddy streaks, A perfect answer is to lami- nate a covering of decorative plastic sheeting to the sills. The plastic, the same kind that has been proven so practical for kitchen sink tops and other home purposes, is smooth and hard as glass and wipes clean in an instant with a damp cloth. You can even keep your ger- anium pots right at the window without causing damage to the sill"s surface. Only marrow strips of the plastic are needed. You may have some leftover scraps on hand from a previous project, or can buy narrow remnants at nominal cost from a local lum- ber dealer or cabinet shop. The plastic comes in literally dozens of solid colors, in attractive marvelized patterns, and in matural wood grains that will blend with or match your furni- ture. , The strips are easily put down with contact-bound ce- ment. No pressure clamps are needed, The only tools required are a fine-tooth saw (a back saw from a mitering set is ex- cellent) and a coarse file. The plastic may be laminated directly over the present paint- ed surface of the window sill, so that makes the work even easier. Get the measurements first. These should be precise for tha inside length, Measu' ment is made most effectiv with an extension-type folding rule that has a movable metal bar that shows the distance be- yond the ruler section. Better still, make a cardboard pattern. The plastic sheeting will be cut to fit snug at the back and sides, but an overlap of about 4%" is left at the front for later trimming. Mark the pattern outline on the plastic, and cut with the back-saw. The sawing must be done carefully, following a def- inite method to avoid chipping of the very thin and hard plas- tic surface. Do the sawing this way: place the plastic finished surface upward on a firm bench or low table, with the cutting line beyond the table edge, Hold the saw almost parallel with the sheeting, so the saw teeth wear through the plastic surface before cutting into the backing material. Move the saw slowly and steadily on the forward stroke, lifting it to clear the plastic on the section so it on't sag and tear. Try the piece for fit. It should lay flat without bulging any- where. If slightly oversize, trim the edge with the file, using downward strokes only. When the fit is perfect (except for the front overlap) spread the contact cement on both the back of the plastic and on the window sill, Use a piece of card- board or playing card to spread the cement, making sure every part is covered with a thin film of cement. Allow the cement to dry thoroughly (about 20 min- utes) before applying. 'The twe cemented surfaces will bond instantly on contact, and the plastic can't be shifted if it isn't correctly positioned. To avoid complications, follow this specific technique.' Cut a piece of wrapping paper the size of the window sill. Lay this Here's a general rule for de- termining the length of a nail that is designated in penny size. Divide the penny size by four and add % 'inch. Thus, a b paper on the sill (the cement should be dry enough so the paper doesn't stick), then put the plastic sheeting on the Paper. Lift the plastic at one end, and fold back the pattern paper underneath to clear a space about 3" wide. Then let down the plastic at that side, making sure that the edges are in proper position against the back and side wall. Press down firmly on the plastic so it stays in place. Now lift the other end, remove the paper underneath, and grad- ually lower the rest of the plas- tic while fitting it closely all along the back window molding. Use a hammer or a scrap wood block to pound down the plastic at every point so it is securely bonded. Now, with the file, trim off the excess plastic at the front so it is flush with the sill edge. Hold the file with both hands, move it in down- ward strokes, lifting the file on the upward return to avoid chipping. The plastic sill covering should last almost indefinitely, looking bright and colorful, and will never need painting. Once you have the procedure down pat, it will be a simple matter to do all the windows in your house. Do - It- Yourself System Almost Way Of Life Here ed t or an answer Doing-it-yourself is almost a way of life for many home own- ers these days. But 'twas not ever thus--as any old timer will tell you. There was a time when every neighborhood had its quota of handymen. No matter what went wrong, from a leaky faucet to a leaky ceiling, you could call on one of these gentlemen and have the repair made for anything from 50 cents to a few dollars, plus a cup of coffee and a piece of apple pie. : Now, when you call a repair- man, you usually get a record- ing service asking you to leave a message. Five or six hours later, if you're lucky, you get a personal reply. If you're still lucky, you are permitted to make an appointment. And if your luck holds out even farther, the repair is made without necessity of taking out loan. Without any of that 1 you get a reply a day later, or no reply at all, get quick service and a forces..the family te eat burgers for a week. Alert Today .-Alive Tomorrow eS".
