The best part is that, regard- less of its condition, the surface of old marble can be restored to its original beauty if certain prescribed procedures are fol- lowed. A confab with Ron Frazier, technical director of the Marble Institute of America, p iced some down-to-earth advice for the do-it-yourselfer who might like to undertake 'such a proj- ect. Frazier offered this in- formation about marble and second-hand marble. Genuine marble comes in an almost endless variety of colors and veinings. Even white marble without color veins has differences in shadings ranging from bluish whites to warm, al- most pink white. If you intend to purchase used marble, you may not have much choice. Second-hand fur- niture dealers usually have marble slabs in pure white or white veined in gray. But if there is an outlet for new marble in your area, let your taste be your guide. CAN CHANGE FINIGH Marble for home use is avail- able in either a polished or non- polished finish. For decorative purposes -- marble-topped fur- niture, book-ends, lamps -- the glass-like or polished finish is best. If the marble will be sub- ject to wear, the satin, honed or abrasive finish is more prac- tical. But don't worry too much ebout the finish, You can change one to the other with sanding or buffing and polish- Thickness may or may not be a matter of yor own choice. Normally, you will find marble slabs available in thicknesses from one-half to one-and-one- fourth inches. The decision to use new or used marble is really only a question of time and money. Marble dealers are able to offer a variety of colors and finish Give New Life To Old Table With Marble Top pay a premium for a marble- topped heirloom when only the marble will be used. Frequently-used marble slabs will have corners missing. If the missing area is less than two square inches, an almost invisible repair can be made. Don't turn down a good buy be- cause the marble you want is in three or four pieces. As long as no large pieces are missing, the slab can be made whole again with hardly a trace of the old breaks showing. When you find a section of Marble sized to fit your pur- pose, don't be concerned about the condition of its surface. Scratch away some of the dirt so you can see the true color. Then start your bargaining. Even bad pit marks, heavy scratches and massive staining can be removed when proper methods are used, After you've taken your piece, or pieces, of marble home, the first step is to inspect what you've got. Using a solution of dishwashing detergent and warm water, clean the surface, rinse and dry with a soft rag. Unless you're lucky, you will notice a number of blemishes, stains and scratches. Take care not to rub too much in one area, since the coarse number takes quite a bite. When the rough edges are rounded over, change to a 120-frit and repeat the process. The process then continues through 220 and 320 grits, but these stages can be accomplish- ed with a power sander. If an electric drill is used, be sure to attach a disk-sander mount- ed on a universal shaft. This will keep the abrasive paper flat regardless of the angle of the drill itself. From time to time swab off the surface with warm water and a_ cellulose sponge. Check the results and stop when minor scratches are still showing. The polishing pro- cess will remove these. Now your slab should have only a faint trace of staining and minute scratches. These will disappear during the pol- ishing process. Using an abras- ive disk of 600-grit, go over the entire surface with your drill, Sponge off with warm water and you should begin to see signs of a polish. For the last step, you'll need a quantity of tin oxide powder obtainable from marble dealers or chemical supply houses.
