JAY BECKER (Top Record-Holder in Masters' Individual Championship Play) Partner bids One Diamond, a player passes, neither side is vulnerable, and you have a part score of 60. What would you bid now with each of the following four hands? 1. @KIS YAM $362 BAQIT. 2. @9% YKE $KQ83 4AI953 3. @KT WK93 $375 4kI642 4 @AKQ62 YQ 9K086 gKe 1. Two notrump. A response of two notrump to partner's Opening bid of one in a suit ordinarily indicates a balanced hand containing 13 to 15 high card points with stoppers in the side suits. The responder, by Jumping to two notrump, an- nounces he has an opening bid of his 'own, and the opener is required to keep on bidding un+ til a game is reached. But when the bidding side has a part score of 60, the twe notrump response has a slightly different meaning. This is be- cause @ one notrump response would constitute a game con- tract, and hence the: two no- trump bid, being necessary, amounts to a slam try. The jopener is not compelled to bid lagain, and, in fact, is expected to pass with minimum values, |The two notrump response with ja part score of 60 is generally |based on 15 or 16 high - card |points, | 2. Three diamonds. The same |principle applies when respond- jer raises a suit one level higher than necessary, Partner is thus jalerted to the possibility of a \slam. Here, alone the jump raise is not forcing. It should be noted that a response of two jclubs - inasmuch as it is suffi cient to mature the part score-- is not a forcing bid and the opener is free to pass. 3, One notrump. Without the part score, the normal response would be two clubs. But a weak suit should not be bid under part-score conditions at a time when the opener is under no | Obligation to bid again. There is too much chance that partner will pass with two or three small clubs. This could result in defeat if the trumps were banked against declarer, since any club losers there were would have to be lost. The notrump response, howe ever, permits the contract te be made on high - card strenght alone, without reference to an unlucky distribution of the ad- verse cards. With 11 high-card points facing an opening bid, there should be no real concern about making seven tricks at notrump - if partner is. willing to accept that contract. 4. Two spades, The jump- shift response is 100 per cent forcing and compels the open- er to bid again regardless of the minimum nature of his hand, The jump - shift differs from the jump raise, which is merely an invitational step towards a slam. There is no upper limit te we strength shown by a jump» shift. Ralph Cowan Rejoins Board TORONTO (CP) Ralph Cowan, ousted from the board of directors of Northwestern General Hospital because of YOUR HEALTH For Clearing Dear Dr. Molner: Would you explain what is meant by "'blow- ing air into your tubes?'"' My family doctor said I might have to have that done. I have been trying to become pregnant.-- Mrs. C. M. Dear Doctor: What happens to the air blown into the body? It caused a lot of pain.--M.L.T. The Fallopian: tubes are the ducts through which an ovum has to pass to become fertilized and thus start a pregnancy. If the tubes are obstructed-- usually due to some past infec- tion -- an ovum cannot get through. The tubes are small, and sometimes a mild infection, perhaps little noticed at the time, can result in enough swell- ing and scar tissue to close them. Hence when other conditions appear normal yet conception does not occur, it is wise to check whether the tubes are open. This is. done by forcing air through--called tubal insuffla- tion. This may in itself open up clogged tubes, or in any event will indicate whether some ob- struction exists. This procedure is not harm- ful.. The air rises in the abdom- inal cavity and can be painful, especially if trapped under the diaphragm. The air is soon ab- sorbed, however. Then the pain is ended and there are no after- effects. Dear Dr. Molner: We have a child who has been diagnosed as hyperkinetic by the school and by our own doctor who has been giving him a drug which had Harmless Procedure By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD Tubes ticles? Perhaps our doctor could prescribe them.--C. L. At least three types of drugs are in use for this, and there may be others. Tranquilizers help in some cases, and in other cases they do not. Tranquilizers would seem to be a thoroughly logical means of controlling this over-activity of the child--yet strangely enough, some drugs which have a quite opposite action some- times prove,to be superior. In some instances carefully controlled doses of ampheta- mines are successful. These are the drugs used in pep pills, yet for some reason: they do not in- crease such a child's active- ness, but instead they help him channel his energy into useful activity. Finally, one of the psychic energizers, suits some' patients excellently. This, as well as the other drugs, must be used with discretion and suitable tests to be sure adverse reaction does not occur. But this warning, of course, applies to any powerful medication. Dear Dr. Molner: | had a Pap smear test this winter, The re- port came back but I have been asked to wait for six months for a repeat test, Why must I wait? I called and wanted a test right away but the doctor told me I must wait. I'm worried.--Mrs, CN I don't understand what is worrying you. Didn't the doctor tell you the result of the test? If it showed any serous trouble, you would have been . called little effect. He then tried an- other that made him even more} active. What medications were| you referring to in your ar-| back at once. 3 If the test' indicated some- a misunderstanding, Wednes- day night was reappointed" to the post he had held for 17 years, Mr. Cowan, 64-year-old Edb- eral member of Parliament for York-Humber, replaces J. G. Johnson, a director who re signed to make the change pos- sible. Mr. Cowan said he had been defeated in April 17 hospital elections because members of two Lions clubs which support the hospital had packed the an- nual meeting. Two of the three men elected to the 14-member board last week were Lions Club mem- bers. One of them, Morris Emer, said he would not have stood for election had he known it would have meant the defeat of Mr. Cowan. ; He said the Lions clubs sent a heavy delegation to the hos- pital's annual meeting in an at- tempt to have one of their mem- bers elected -- not to have any- one defeated. The clubs ¢on- tributed $19,000 to the hospital last year. ing six months later but a re- peat test immediately wouldn't add anything. Finally, a routine Pap test every six months is a good pol- icy for any woman over 30, and is recommended by mahy phys- icians. You have alarmed your- self unnecessarily.
