WHITBY DAY - BY - DAY Music Teaching Methods Described By Teachers WHITBY (Staff) -- In keep- ing with the fine arts theme of the April meeting of the Dr. Robert Thornton Home and School Association, primary grade teachers, Mrs. McLellan, Mrs. Robert King and Mrs. Ronald Bryant demonstrated, with three groups of children from Grades 1 to 4, how music is taught using large charts and games to create interest and enjoyment. The children progress from feeling the beat with their feet and hands to singing in two parts by the Grade 2 level. In Grades 3 and 4 the children are encouraged to create extra verses. There was a display of the children's art as well as the science teacher, John Little's excellent collection of Eskimo artifacts. Mrs. Arthur Joynt presented 'ontario Federation fe mem- bership certificates to Mrs. E, L. Pipher and Mrs. Donald Wood in recognition of their many years of service in the association. Mrs. Peter Loft- house, unable to attend be- cause of illness, will receive her certificate later. Patsy Bell, winner of the Grade 7 public speaking con- "Newfoundland Prime Minister Smallwood." Sheffield, president, sug- gested that a letter be sent to the school board requesting the school library be open one day a week throughout the sum- and meeting er. William Howden, principal, asked everyone to give their full support for the school con- cert, which is to be presented 4 and 5. The proceeds will be used for the Centennial Year 'Book and the Centennial Choir. He announced that an essay |contest is tobe held in Grades 5 and 6. Kindergarten registra- tion will be held June 12 in the school's main foyer. The room plaque was won by Mrs. Ethel Vint's class.
