SERVICE 7 O Sn a IHADTOGOTOTHE \ YOUR HEALTH Threat To Of German Measles fspring By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD Dear Dr. Molner: A film was shown on what makes a re- tarded child. It said that if the mother hadn't had German measles before, and got it dur- ing pregnancy, the child would be retarded and deformed. I never heard of this before and was wondering if there was any truth to it. I have a re- tarded daughter and am quite sure I never had German measles.--Mrs. F. B. | It's true, If the mother has/ German measles very early in pregnancy (first three months) there is great possibility that the child will be defective in some respect: physical, mental or both. | This is only one of many| causes of retardation, however.| The causes fall into several main categories: Heredity; ill- ness occurring early in preg- nancy (some drugs are danger- ous); or something that hap- pens to the child after it has been born. oar The significance of having German measles before preg- nancy is simply that if you've already had the disease, you are protected against getting it again. Dear Dr. Moiner: I am an alcoholic but. haven't had a drink in over a year. Recently I have been working too hard and was advised by a friend in A.A, to take niacin to pep me up. It seems to help but I get a tingling sensation when I take it. Could it be harmful or dan- blood vessles. This gives you a lush or tingling sensation, but it lasts only a few minutes and is not harmful. However, neither niacin nor any other vitamin is the answer to fatigue. True, you may feel better temporarily but there is "!\clarer might finesse, so he put jup the nine which South won ;with the king. East was unduly apprehensive in playing the nine, for, while it is true that South could have won the trick by inserting the eight if East followed low, it is hardly likely that he would have made this play. From declarer's viewpoint, | West's ten play could have been jmade from a holding of the J- 10-9, the J-10, or the 10-9, and lone of these three cases was far more likely to exist than the actual one. He would therefore presumably have gone up with the king and down as a result. | As it was, however, South |proceeded to make the hand jafter East played the nine. He jhe-entered dummy with a spade, ruffed a spade, played a club to the king, and ruffed another spade. The two ruffs reduced South's trump holding to the Q-8, while East still had the J-5. Declarer then entered dummy with the ace of clubs and led his spade winners, giving East a Hobson's choice of when to ruff. East's potential trump trick disappeared as a result, and South wound up with twelve tricks. East should have recognized early the imminence of a trump coup and realized that he would be setting himself up as a site ting duck {f he split the J-9. Patient Dies In Wheelchair BRANTFORD, Ont. (CP)--A semi-paralysed patient with a heart condition died in his wheelchair when a small fire broke out in his sixth-floor room at the Brantford General Hos- pital Monday. Hospital administrator Ken- neth Muir said an autopsy has been ordered to determine whether the patient, Frederick Howell, 55, of Brantford died of ja heart attack or burns. The fire was discovered by @ nurse and a doctor who saw smoke billowing from Howell's room. They turned in an alarns but were unable to save Hows ell. The hospital power plant su pervisor, Wallace Forsythe, car« ried a second patient in Howe ell's room, Archie Gray, to safety. He said all but a few of 266 motorists prosecuted last year for stopping on the verge were found asleep. no substitute for adequate rest, and adjusting your work load to your energies. (Congratulations on the year in A.A.) Dear Dr. Molner: Is it true that a woman using oral con- traceptives ("the pill') must change to another brand after three years because the system becomes immune and preg- nancy is possible?--Mrs. G. No, that is not so. There are differences in ingredients, strength and schedule of use for different kinds, but there re- mains a fundamental similarity in the way all of them work. Therefore follow exactly the in- structions given for your type of pill. Pregnancy, when the pill is being used, is the result of breaking the dosage schedule one way or another. Dear Dr. Molner: I have something wrong with my eyes, black spots or lines. I went to an eye doctor, and he called it floaters. He painted the picture kind of dark, and said it could get worse. I wish you could give me a little encouragement.-- Mrs, A. S. Floaters are quite common as we get older and rarely indicate gerous? I had a physical re- cently and nothing was found wrong.--A.A. Is a test at any other time in the day a true analysis? --N. N. You are mistaken. The first urine test in the morning is the least reliable for detecting eartly or mild diabetes. A specimen collected two hours after a large meal is more reliable. (If there is doubt, a sugar toler: ance test should be done. That is a type of blood test.)
