12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Mondey, April 24, 1967 Starts Dear Readers: I'm shook. Re- cently I printed a letter from a Dallas golfer who wrote to say he wore his wife's girdle be- cause it relieved his aching back and improved his posture. He added nonchalantly that he also wore his wife's nylon hose because he needed to hook the garters to something to keep his girdle down. Shortly after that letter ap- peared I heard from another man whose luggage had been lost and he had no underwear. His wife gave him a pair of her bloomers, just for the night. He liked them so well he never did go back to wearing shorts. That was in 1945 and he has been wearing ladies' bloomers ever since. Last week I have received an avalanche of letters. The mail attests.to the fact that a start- ling number of men--most of them married and with famil- ies--fhoroughly enjoy dressing up in women's clothes. I assure you these people are not put- ting me on. They are strictly for real. Here are some sam- ples: Dear Ann Landers: Why do you point an accusing finger at any man who happens to prefer some article of women's cloth- ing? Some men enjoy a_ soft, smooth fabric next to their skin. Somewhere along the line men THE STARS SAY By ESTRELLITA FOR TUESDAY Present planetary influences indicate a more or less routine day. Slight revisions in business and (or) financial plans could be profitable in the long run, but don't make drastic changes, especially where unnecessary. FOR THE BIRTHDAY If Tuesday is your birthday, your horoscope indicates that, while the year ahead should be more than satisfactory where your financial interests are con- cerned, it would not be advis- able to try to increase assets through speculation. This will be especially important during the first two weeks of Septem- ber, but the entire year is one in which no Taurean should take chances with cash on hand. You will have some excellent periods in which to make gains if you operate conservatively, however--especially during the first two weeks in August and ANN LANDERS Emergency Clothing Unusual Habit got stuck with cotton under- wear. I can assure you if men's silk shorts were not so expen- sive they would outsell cotton shorts by the carload. Shortly- after I married, my wife. was making a dress for herself. We are the same height. She asked me to put on her dress so she could pin the hem properly. I liked the feel of the silk dress and asked her if she would make one for me to lounge in. Now I have several lounging dresses and they are much more comfortable than slacks and a T-shirt. I'm not a fairy and I resent the inference that any man who wears wom- en's clothes is a little funny.-- Dyersville, Iowa Dear Dy: My haberdashery expert tells me cotton shorts are plenty soft. enough for any- body and that most men prefer cotton shorts to the sleazier fab- rics. I would not try to change the mind of a guy who sits around in his wife's dresses, however, so enjoy yourself, Bub. Dear Ann Landers: Many men enjoy dressing up in wom- en's Clothing. I, for one, can tell you it's a real kick in the head. Here's how I discovered how much fun it could be. Several years ago my wife and I went to a Switch Sex Ball at our country club. My wife wore our oldest son's suit. I wore one of her made-over eve- ning dresses, her wig and white fox stole. My wife did my make- up -- false eyelashes and the works--and painted my finger- nails. I won first prize as the Fooler Female. I enjoyed the outfit so much I decided to wear it again sev- eral nights later when the two of us took a weekend vacation. We posed as two women friends and no one batted an eye. Now I have several Fooler outfits and whenever we are out of town we have a few evenings as women. This may seem strange, but I assure you I am perfectly nor- mal. These little masquerade 'parties are simply our way of having fun.--All Man Dear Man: Yup. You're all normal--all you guys who like to dress up in women's clothes. And if anyone says otherwise, just hit 'em with your purse, dearie. CHILD GUIDANCE By GARRY C, MYERS, PhD From what they hear and read many parents of the young child, say under four or five, suppose they should be able to guide him well by explaining to him and reasoning with him-- to limit what he may do, to keep him from dangers and things to which he is dangerous, and to respect the rights of others. They may continue in this way only to discover later they have on hand a youngster who has little regard. for the word no. They may have an al- most unmanageable youngster. Wiser parents begin as soon as the child begins to creep and walk to teach him to respect this little word, no, said only once in any situation. They limit the use of this word to the few things he should never have or do. However, parents exert no end of patience to get this youngster to want to do what they want him to do. But there comes a time when this child, say at six, eight, or older, can profitably learn to do what he is told to do in the par- ents' presence. The parent find- ing herself often successful in such matters is inclined to put her faith in guiding him in like manner in her absence. Accordingly, this parent may command the child while home not to purchase food at the sweet shop near the school, without being sure she can en- force this command. This par- ent may tell him at home how to behave well in the classroom --to try hard to do well there what he is assigned to do, never to daydream and always to pay Strict attention. Such advice may have a good purpose but it usually is futile. CHILD DAYDREAMS Many parents of children in elementary grades write that he is inattentive at school, often Defining, Reasoning With Child Requires Quiet, Calm Voice ing is that they usually do it in an angry tone. When we come to think of it, don't all of us parents tend to do such exhorting and talking in unpleasant tones? Don't we do it when we are least fit emotion- ally to talk and the child least able to profit from what we say? We would do well to quit such exhorting and talking. Instead we will consider what we may do at home in exercising the child constantly in desirable ways there which might carry over to school and the play- ground. and exhortations by parents at home to the child in the grades, junior high and senior high school, aimed at causing him to strive harder at book learning. Right at home where the par- ents might direct him in more faithful diligence in homework, this parent may trust to fre- quent rebuke of him for not striving hard at this homework. Perhaps fathers who are suc- cessful at their own work are most inclined to indulge in these frequent periods of exhorting the child who lags at school. Even in matters of chores and home responsibilities many par- ents put their chief trust in mere talk. Why don't they cen- tre their efforts on exercising the child's right at home in better ways? Of course there may be a time and place at home for talking with our child.
