Majority Of U.S. Residents Regard God As Loving Father Do Americans think ee as their Father; or Is re- mote and mysterious To find out, Gallup public- opinion interviewers, sponsored by The Catholic Digest, asked Americans who said they be- lieved in God, "How do you think of God --as a loving Father who looks after us; as some kind of supernatural Pow- er but don't know what; or how"' This question was first asked in 1952. Seven out of ten Americans, 73% think of God as a loving Father. In 1952 79% thought the same. Two out of ten, 19% visualize Him as some kind of Power. The 1952 percentage was 17. Seven percent (5% in 1952) gave answers classified as "Other." (The totals are over 100% because of multiple an- swers.) The most noteworthy aspect of religious groups' concept of God is not the difference be- tween Protestants as group, and Catholics, but the differences between Protestant denomina- tions. Only 56% of Congrega- tionalists and 58% of Episco- palians think of God first as a lowing Father, compared to ures for those with a grade- school education or less are 81% and 15%. The number of college graduates who think of God as a Father has dropped 16% since 1952. Occupation is another influ- ence on our concepts of God. More than eight out of ten farmers and service workers, but fewer than six out of 10. professional people, think of God as a Father. The service workers were one of the few groups which ran counter to the national trend: the percent age of those who thought of from 77% to 81%. Poor people are most likely to consider God as a_ loving Father. Eight out of ten of them, but only seven out of ten in the middle-income group, and only six out of ten in the upper-income group think of God as a Father. Population density is seldom considered an influence on re- ligion, but it is. Only 72% of those living in large cities think of God first as a Father, com- pared to 79% in small towns God as a Father first increased | The special speakers at thi: Sunday's services will be Majo: Major Holmes is secretary 0! education ,at the Toronto Train ing College. But sex does. Women (79%) are far more likely to think of God as a Father than men are (66%). Age did not use to affect Americans' concepts of God. At least, it didn't in 1952. But it! does today. The older you are thé more likely you are to think of God as a Father. | Education is a major influ- ence on how we think about God.
