1Z THE OSHAWA TIMES, Soturdey, April 22, 1967 NEXT SATURDAY marks the opening of trout season in all local waters. The real problem -with stream _ trout fishing in these parts is not so much the lack of trout as it is a place to fish. Invariably this is caused by the posting of streams to no trespassing which originates from poor conduct of fishermen on pri- vate land. The fact that the Department of Lands and Forests places trout in the streams does not give anyone théright to trespass over private land and a No Tres- passing sign does not say anything about the right to fish. So the fisherman who OUTDOORS By Bill Owens Times Outdoor Writer and offer part of your catch to the owner. More often than not he will not accept them but this is good insurance for another visit. WHILE ON the property make doubly certain you live up to your promised conduct. Close all gates after you and climb fences only at a fence post. When you break off for lunch, don't start any fires for cooking or any other rea- son. Collect your trash and take it away with you. Be very careful not to leave any bottles or cans around which will cut livestock or the own- er's children if they happen to use the creek for a swims spends a little time giving ming hole. this matter some _ serious : thought will more than likely IF YOU PAY subsequent spend an enjoyable and pro- ductive day . ... and all it takes is a little patience, understanding, courtesy and common sense. FIRST OF ALL select the settion of stream you want to fish and approach the owner of the property four or five days or even a week before you intend to fish. Try to pick 'a time in the morning or late afternoon; avoid meal- times whenever possible. Make sure you are dressed neatly. If you.are planning to fish with your buddy have him along with you. When you arrive at the house ask to see the owner or manager of property. If you get the owner the first time as you often will, introduce yourself and your fishing partner in a friendly and sociable man- ner. Tell the owner that both of you are experienced fisher- men and that you are will- ing to conduct yourself in a sportsmanlike manner if you are given permission to tres- pass for the purpose of fish- ing. YOU MAY GET turned down if the owner, has had a hard time from characters in the past. Don't argue or point out that, you are different but thank him and try. another spot. The chances are how- ever, that the owner will wel- come your approach and ap- pearance in which case you will have broken the biggest barrier to bad landowner re- lations. If you get permission to trespass, tell your new friend when you expect to leave his property. If you are lucky enough to catch a few trout, drop back to the house visits to the stream always go to the house before you start your fishing. As the owner gets to know you he may tell you not to bother to check in, but in the be- ginning this is important. As you get to know the owner you may learn something about him and his family of a personal nature. A carton of smokes or a box of candy at birthday time will exem- plify your thoughtfulness and friendliness. An invitation to a dinner party will be a great event and a card at Christ- mas and Easter will bring you to mind during the off season. So, for your next fish- ing trip try. these simple rules of etiquette, thoughtful- ness and good sportsmanship and you will most certainly be guaranteed of a place to fish as long as you continue to obey the courtesies you expect to be shown to you. By HAL BOCK Associated Press Sports Writer It was almost as if the heav- ens opened in mercy over Cha- vez Ravine. Buried in ninth place with five losses in their first seven games, the National League champion Los Angeles Dodgers could be excused if they ap- proached their four game se- ries with red hot St. Louis some- what less than enthusiastically. After all, the first place Car- dinals had won six of their first seven games. About the only thing Los An- geles could hope for was a mir- acle . . . like maybe rain in California. Now any native will tell you that rain in California is about as rare as snow in Florida. The Dodgers hadn't lost an inning to the elements in nine years since moving from that nasty Brooklyn climate. They'd played 737 consecutive games at home including exhibitions and World Series. MIRACLE HAPPENS But Friday night, it rained in Los Angeles, and the Dodgers didn't have to play the Cardi- nals. Not only did the weather keep up the California coast and wiped out San Francisco Giants' game against Atlanta Braves. Three National League games were played Friday. Vada Pin- son's 10th inning triple drove in two runs as Cincinnati Reds trimmed Houston Astros 3-1. Two months ago the 21-year- old rookie netminder with Mont- real Canadiens was virtually unknown in pro hockey ranks. Now he is in a position to help the club to its third straight Cup Victory. He earned the right to the No. 1 goaltending job by helping Canadiens to 15 wins, five ties and three losses in 23 games and a 2.44 goals - against aver- age. In four playoff games against New York, Vachon allowed only eight goals, however, the youngster from Palmorolle in northern Quebec admits the hero role has had him off bal- ance at times. START UNEXPECTED "I figured I was called up just to ride the bench while Gump Worsley was hurt and I never expected to get a chance to play then, never mind in the playoffs," Vachon said.
