'Shy 18 - Year-Old Eskimo Boy Travels 900 Toboggan Miles WINNIPEG (CP) -- --Barney Too Too, a shy 18-year-old Es- kimo from Churchill,. Man., travelled 900 bone-jarring mo- tor toboggan miles to see the "big animals' in Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park zoo. Well, that wasn't the real reason for the trip but it was his first request when he bounded out of bed hours after arriving in Winnipeg with three other Churchill men. The six-day trip over the northern tundra, through deep snow and around dense bush was their centennial project. The four--Barney, Del Purdy, 35, Earl Purdy, 25, and Ted Playford, 26--left their home on the Hudson Bay with the tem- perature hovering near 35 be- low and averaged about 150 miles a day. Ted says they started to plan the trip in December. "We all like skidooing, and we wanted '8 p.m. sharp Lunch -- Prizes Admission 50¢ to see the country and go some- where. After we decided to go, hug to make it our centennial rip." Towing three supply tobog- gans, they followed railway tracks and ditches on their southward journey. On the rugged tundra, their supply to- boggans were damaged and they spent a day making re- pairs. Lost time was made up by travelling all one night. One motor toboggan also broke down and another one was purchased at the first town they came to. They were met north of Win- nipeg by representatives of the Manitoba Golden Boys and the mayor of Selkirk. They were escorted to the Winnipeg sub- urb of Charleswood where Bar- ney became the first honorary citzen of the municipality, Next morning, Barney was up bright and early. Afrer visiting the zoo, and while his com- panions rested he participated in the Charleswood winter car- nival's 100-mile motor toboggan we needed a purpose, so we de- race.
