OSHAWA CURLING CLUB MEN CLOSE OUT SEASON WITH FUN PARTY THE LEADER of the band, and the grand march, traditional ceremony of Plumber's Night'? is Fred "Plumber" Garrard. He is shown here, "stepping out" with his partner of the 8 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, April 17, 1967 evening, 'Miss Lazy Mae Souch," as Oshawa Curling Club members wound up their season on Saturday night, with another gala closing program of fun and frolic. THEY CLOSED their curl- ing season at The Oshawa Curling Club over the. week- end but it wouldn't be quite correct to say they "officially closed" because there wasn't really enough dignity attached to the combo-event to rate the term official. However, that the season was closed, was an established fact. By the time the grand marchers and cos- tumed curlers had concluded their activities of "Plumber's Night," there was barely enough good ice remaining for "Hap" Hamel to have his annual skating workout. The old Maple Leaf still has fine form, too! They had the en- tire ice surface covered with sand by noon yesterday and we can warn anyone who drops in the club this week, and the dancers, when they hold forth this Saturday -- you'll never know the old place now! THE LADIES of OCC held forth on Friday, for their an- tual closing party and they not only held forth, they held fifth and even a half-dozen in some places. They had almost a hundred members in cos- tume and the novel ideas de- picted were a credit to their ingenuity. Their: final curling session wasn't serious either but they had a fine day's fun, topped off with a dinner and numerous skits. On Saturday night, following the "Plumb- er's Night" parade, the mem- bers were entertained by guest artists, after which they enjoyed a hot buffet, then Sing-song and cards, wound up the season, WE SAW a very fine magi- cian on Saturday night, a chap by the name of Jack Bateman, who will be remembered by many as an Oshawa _ home- brew. Jack mystified them at the curling club but as a magi- cian, we'd have to say the best we saw on Saturday was a fellow named Terry Sawchuk. Don't know who made the Suggestion or decision -- it might even have been Johnny Bower himself, or Punch TODAY LACROSSE Oshawa Minor Assoc.: Reg- istration for Novices (8-10 years) and Midgets (14-16 years); at Civic Auditorium, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. TUESDAY LACROSSE Oshawa Minor Assoc.: Reg- istration for Tykes (6-8 years) and Bantams (12-14 years); at Civic Auditorium, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. SIGNS CONTRACT ISPORTS MEN "4 By Geo. H. Campbell Associate Sports Editor Imlach or King Clancy ~ or ia combination following a huddle, but the move to put 'Sawchuk in the net, when play 'was resumed in the second stanza, that won the game for Toronto Maple Leafs. Who knows -- it may also have won the series. FANTASTIC is the word to describe Sawchuck's acro- batics and amazing display of skill in the art of stopping pucks, that he performed in Saturday afternoon's game. If that kind of entertainment doesn't sell the U.S. sports fans who gets his kicks out of TV sports action, then said fan should sell his set. The first period produced two goals apiece and some hockey far below what's expected in Stanley Cup play. But brother --those two periods were sen- sational and became more so, each minute, winding up with a grand climax that was in doubt, even after Jim Pappin (he wasn't supposed to play, remember?) had made it 4-2 with less than three minutes remaining. The series resumes at Maple Leaf Gardens to- morrow night and while it could still go back to Chicago for a seventh game, it might be that the Hawks, if Stan Mikita is missing from their line-up, may find the Mapleos just too much. TORONTO '@ARLIES. won 3-2 at home yesterday after- noon and now lead the OHA Junior 'A' final series, three games to nil. They play back in Hamilton tonight, when the Red Wings have to win, if they are to stay "alive." Right now, with the Toronto team starting to jell again, they look like the team to make the bid for this year's Memorial Cup honors. CAPSULE COMMENT: Con- gratulations to the five young Ajax girls, who retained their "world's" five - pin bowling championship in the tourna- ment at Guelph... OSHAWA JAYCEES, this city's repre- jsentatives in OASA Juvenile 'A' playoffs for the last two seasons, are holding their first workout on Wednesday even- ing, 6:00 o'clock, at Connaught Park and coach Marcel Boivin says the welcome mat is out for any Juvenile-aged boy who wants to try for this softball club... JOHN HAYES, Osh- awa's harness horse mogul, and Gary Feagan, have both been suspended from driving (driving only, in overnight events) for six racing days. The terms were imposed fol- lowing an "unsatisfactory drive' in Friday night's pro- gram at Mohawk Raceway. WINS HORSE VAULT ---- As Leafs Grab Lead " ALAS, POOR SKIP, we knew him well!
