B THE OSHAWA TIMES, Seturdey, April 15, 1967 SPORTS B By Eric Wesslby Times Sports Editor BY THE TIME you read this, either Toronto Maple Leafs or Chicago Black Hawks will have decided which team is ahead in their National Hockey League Stan- ley Cup. semi-final series. Leafs, of course, are the long shots in betting circles, espe- cially since they have won only one game in Chicago this year, and two of the remain- ing three games, if neces- sary, are in Chicago. But you can't go by past performances _ in hockey playoffs. THURSDAY NIGHT'S game in Toronto was a rugged one, although not as hard hitting as the third game of the series. Toronto's defence ap- peared to show its age in this game, with Alan Stanley and Marcel Pronovost not nearly as effective as they were in Toronto's 3-1 win Tuesday. Hawks were allowed to float almost at will in the Toronto end, with the Toronto for- wards not performing their chores too well. Chicago miss- ed many scoring chances especially centre Phil. Espo- sito, who tipped two shots past the open corner of the net within 10 seconds of each other in the second period. ONE THING'S fog sure, whichever team wins this series is going to be hurting when it goes against the well rested Montreal contingent of Toe Blake in the final. Blake's charges will have at least a week's rest before tackling the winner of this round and unless they get carried away in practice ses- sions, all their small wounds will be well healed by the opening game of the Stanley Cup final. FORMER TORONTO Maple Leafs' baseball pitcher Billy Rohr made a great start to- wards a major league career yesterday with that one-hit triumph over New York Yankees. Of course holding the Yankees to one hit these days isn't near the chore it | used to be, when you had to face Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, and Elston Howard in BASEBALL SCOREBOARD By THE CANADIAN PRESS National League W iL Pet. ALTHOUGH ROHR took a back seat to Gary Waslewski with Leafs last year, he was still the top pitching prospect as far as Boston was concern- ed. Only 21, he could be the lefthander the Red Sox have been seeking since Mel Par- nell called it quits. Boston {certainly has the hitting |power throughout the lineup.
