24 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Soturdey, April 15, 1967 GARDEN GUIDE Many Aspects To Be Considered In Proper Landscaping Design By A. R. BUCKLEY Good landscape design is con- cerned not only with what you can see but with the provision of areas for comfort and con- venience. The value of design, then, can only be appreciated when many aspects are taken into account. Design is a process and not a result. The value of design is in the analysis of the require- ments in relation to site condi- tions. The result of design pro- cess is expressed in the actual construction of the garden. You cannot transplant a part of someone's well-landscaped gar- den to your own without thoughtful modification, since every residential property and every family's requirements differ. You can take an idea from another garden that will fit into your own, but you will need to make additions and de- letions to this plan as space permits. A well-designed garden has a subtle intangible quality that pleases the senses without being obvious. What is pleasing| to the modernist may not ap- the small home property as well! as the large park area. Landscape plans can be for-! mal or informal and the texture}! of plants merits careful consid- eration. Water can be used to unify plantings as well as pro- viding a special attraction. We now look upon the garden as a place to enjoy. We believe it "entry court" which is enclosed by a small hedge or screen and produces, inside, certain ele- ments interesting to the visitor who approaches the front door. Sculpture or small pools that complement the architecture might enrich the initial impres- sion of the visitor. The service area, where certain utilities have to be maintained, is usual- ly located with the garage and contains space for trash, stor- age and other service demands. The fourth division of the prop- erty is the private area,' or back yard, where the owner may relax or entertain in com- parative privacy. A play area for children may also be placed here. Many Features, Materials Needed Once you have considered the basic functional divisions you can begin locating them in the plan in relation to each other and to the particular site. Final refinements can only be added after the basic areas are fixed. It is then that the "self-expres- may take the place of many shrubs. It also gives a sense of proportion and play of light and shadow. Trees and shrubs modify the microclimate and give the sound of wind if the proper type is selected.
