§ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thuredey, Apr! 13, 1967 SPORTS BEAT |. By Eric Wesslby Times Sports Editor TORONTO MARLBOROS played one good period of hockey at Maple Leaf Gar- dens last night but it was enough to give them the opening game of the Ontario Hockey Association Junior a" final. Marlboros, as a team, were terrible through the first two periods, al- though goalkeeper Bob Whid- den and centre Terry Caffery played well, Hamilton Red Wings checked hard, skated miles and fired plenty.of shots at Whidden, IN THE third period, how- ever, things changed. Wings were still skating but for some strange reason they quit shoot- ing. Marlboros, on the other hand, suddenly came to life, led by Caffery, and when the shooting was over it left you wondering if you had watched four teams play two games. Caffery's goal was a thing of beauty as he came up to de- fenceman Randy Manery, shoved the puck at him, pulled it back as he went around the Wing and beat goalkeeper Gary Gray with a low bullet. RIGHT WINGER Mike By- ers, strangely silent in the playoffs in a scoring way, finally found the range for Marlies, pulling the trigger twice with hard drives. Gray wasn't sharp on at least two of the goals but couldn't be faulted for Wings collapse. He appears to have developed the habit of falling away from the puck but throwing his catching hand in its direc- tion. This cost Wings at least two goals. DEFENCEMAN RICK Smith was a standout for Wings and was a tired performer by game's end. At the other end, Brian Glennie played well for Marlboros and both players should have a good future in pro hockey. But it was Caf- fery who swung the tide last night, and Wings will have to find some way to stop him if they are going to win this series, TORONTO MAPLE Leafs will find out tonight if their checking is going to muffle the big guns of the Hawks much longer. TUESDAY'S GAME had quite a few humorous mo- ments but one of the funniest sights came in the first period when the Hawks' Eric Nester- enko broke down the left wing HOCKEY SCOREBOARD (Moose Jaw leads best-of-nine|ning, 6-2, to take the round on semi-final 3-2, three games tied) |total goals, 12 to 9. best of-five| during a Toronto power play. Asked yesterday if he had given any thought to retaliating, Mikita said that he had but Leafs kept skating away after hit- ting him. Montreal coach Toe Blake, never an outspoken optimist, ap- peared well satisfied with his team's performance, especially with the work of centres Jean Beliveau, Henri Richard and Ralph Backstrom. Precisely the opposite condi- tion, lack of strength at centre is perhaps the most crucial problem facing Rangers coach Emile Francis. Phil Goyette, New York's top point-getter dur- ing the regular season, was hurt in the first game and has been having a poor series. Another centre, Orland Kurt- enbach, was hurt in the second game, dressed but didn't play in the third here Tuesday night, and is unlikely to be in the lineup tonight. Thus, faced with the necessity of juggling his top lines, Francis had Jean Ratelle and Red Ber- enson practising faceoffs against each other during most of Wed- nesday's workout. One or the other is expected to get the call for a regular shift at centre to- night, The Canadiens are at full strength and appear to be confi- dent of wrapping up the series in four straight games and en- tering the finals in quest of a third consecutive Stanley Cup. They will return to Montreal tonight by train immediately after the game. If a fifth game is necessary, it will be held there Saturday night. SEES PROBLEM AHEAD Blake said if the Canadiens eliminate New York tonight or Saturday, and Chicago Black Hawks and Toronto Maple Leafs go the limit in the other series, this will present a problem. "If you're healthy, you have to skate and work out harder in your practices while you're waiting for the other series to end." Francis acknowledged that Montreal has been playing its best hockey of the season in the last couple of weeks but "they're due to lose." He would not make any pre- dictions beyond tonight's game but "if we beat them in this next game, they're liable to lose made it 6-2 on the game. their momentum." 4', 5' and 6' | ) | | | SPORTING EQUIP. @ LACROSSE @ BASEBALL @ GOLF @ TEAM SWEATERS @ AND JACKETS Try Stan's For The Best Deal In Town STAN'S Sharpening & Rentals Ltd, 223 King St. W. | aad ar STOCKADE WOOD FENCE For Privacy, Beauty OF eT Simpsons-Sears SPRING FENCE SALE No Money Down--Up To 3 Years to Pay CHA high.
