12 THE OSHAWA Times, wikea, April 12, 1967 Topics Wins Safety Award The editor of GM Topics has received one of four top awards spresented by the Industria' Accident Prevention Associa- tions for promotion of on-the- job and ff-the-job safety practices through company publications. N. M. Hall of General Motors in Oshawa received a framed certificate during the IAPA sponsored safety conference in Toronto. The winning editors were chosen in competition with a large number of other com- pany publication writers from all parts of the province, said an IAPA spokesman. They were judged on depth and Jvalue of their editorial promo- tion of both industrial and off- the-job safety measures. Lake Erie Still Alive ~ Director TORONTO (CP)--Water pol- lution experts maintained Mon- day that Lake Erie is still alive and that conditions are not as bad as they have been made out to be. Delegates to the International Association for Great Lakes re- search said at a news confer- ence that in fact the lake is so alive with biological activity that it is getting all choked up. J. H. Neil, director of the di- vision of laboratories for the Ontario Water Resources Com- mission, said the lake is still a good source of potable water. The changes in the lake simply make treatment meth- ods more difficult and costly, but they are still economical, he said. Prof. P. H. Jones, associate director of the Great Lakes In- stitute, suggested the pendulum had swung too far, from no concern to too much concern about the condition of Lake Erie. He believed, however, that present methods for controlling pollution of its waters were in- adequate. Prof. Jones said secondary pollution, caused by nutrients such as nitrogen and phos- phorus and coming from sew- age, chemical fertilizers and animal manure, and deter- gents, should be eliminated at the source.
