Construction started in November, 1963 -- operations began in May 1964. That's the remarkable engineering and construc- tion record of Lake Ontario Steel Company known familiarly as LASCO. On a 385 acre site, with ample space for future expansion, LASCO'S initial capacity was 100,000 tons a year. Less than a year later, with the addition of a second electric furnace, capa- city was doubled. Plans call for increased capacity to 300,000 tons annually by 1968. : LASCO produces a full range reinforcing and merchant bar products for the Construction Industry, The Steel Warehousing Industry, and the Fabricating and Forging Industry. j LASCO employs some 550 people from the Whitby-Oshawa area end through expansion and diversification will continue to be an important force in the economy of the area.
