Whitby Branch is entering its | 14th year of operation. | Donald Robertson, the. man- ager, said the branch began} business March 1, 1954 when) hinge at 102 Brock Street irst housed the branch. How- | ever, as the demand grew for| increased banking facilities, the | bank in 1960 opened its present | office at the corner of Dundas | and Brock Streets to replace | the original quarters. However, history records that the Bank of Montreal had a much earlier association with Whitby. A history of Ontario County, published in 1878, states that Thomas Dow, a son of Wil- liam Dow, one of the pioneer residents of the area, was ap- Pointed agent for the bank in Whitby in 1853. This was the first bank agency in the county town. The first manager of the branch, which opened in 1954, was J. N. McKone, who !eft in 1958 and is now manager of the branch in Midland. He was succeeded by C. G. Sutherland, who served until 1965 when he moved to the bank's City Hall branch in London. Mr. Robertson became man- ager at Whitby in November, 1965, after having held the same position at Grand Bend. Today, the Whitby branch is one of 350 B of M offices throughout Ontario, one-third the number in al lof Canada. There are four other offices in the Oshawa district. In addition to branches at Ajax, where J. A. Logan is manager, and at Bowmanville, where the manager is J. A. Bell, the bank has two offices | in Oshawa. The main Oshawa _ branch, | which was established almost | a half century ago, in 1919, is) managed by James McCansh, | while Donald Shanahan is man- ager of the Oshawa Shopping Centre branch, 1817 FOUNDING The Whitby B of M, like the other offices in this area, is backed by the resources and facilities of Canada's oldest bank, which was founded in November 1817 by nine Mont- real merchants.
