10 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdoy, April 11, 1967 Gilmour Indicted On Perjury Court MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP)--Har- fess race driver Williaam D. (Buddy) Gilmour was indicted Monday by a grand jury on perjury charges stemming from a beating he took the day after he won a horse race. Also indicted was the man al- leged to have assaulted Gil- mour at the Island Inn in Westbury, N.Y., Jan. 23, 1966. Four other men were previ- ously indicted by the same Nassau County grand jury in its investigation of harness racing. One was accused of lying con- cerning who assaulted Gil- mour; another man was charged with lying concerning his relationship to the alleged assailant. Both are drivers. The state harness racing commission refused to renew Gilmour's horse-driver's licence because of conflicting state- ments he made about the beat- ing and the race run the day before at Roosevelt Raceway in Westbury. There had been unconfirme reports that Gilmour, a nat of Lucan, Ont. had troub! crossed some gamblers a! that the horse he drove, Skeet Brooke, was supposed to ha lost. Skeeter Brooke won t' race. Commission investigatoi have said they were satisfie there was no fix. MADE APPEAL Gilmour, 35, subsequently ap- pealed his licence denial and month-long hearings before the commission ended March 20 with the outcome still pending. Arrested with Gilmour at the Nassau County district attor- ney's office was John Malizia, 48, alias Joe DiBella, han- dyman with a police record listing arrests for bookmaking and other forms of gambling. Malizia, who the district at- torney's office says is barred from all state race tracks by the harness racing commission, was charged with third-degree assault upon Gilmour. Seven Canadian Marks 'Broken At D TORONTO (CP) --Swim- ming officials said Monday seven Canadian indoor records 'were shattered during the weekend at the U.S. National Amateur Athletic Union cham- -pionships in Dallas, Tex. Ralph Hutton of Ocean Falls, B.C., Bill Mahony of Vancou- 'yer and Jim Shaw of Toronto, all members of Canada's 1966 British Empire Games team, came up with records while failing to win a single event. Hutton posted a 16:29.3 in the 1,650-yard freestyle, the second fastest time ever recorded in the world for the distance. Mike Burton of UCLA turned in a time of 16:04. It will not be recognized as a world record because it was swum in a 25- yard pool instead of a regula- tion 50-metre pool. Hutton's 4:19.3 in the 400-yard individual medley was good enough to crack the 4:30 rec- ord of Jack Kelso of Ocean Falls, but not good enough to qualify him for the final at the Texas meet. He came third in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:41.3 to better Gilchrist's record of 4:48.1. Shaw set two records, but failed to qualify in either event. He swam the 100-yard back- stroke in 54.2 to lower his pre- vious record of 55.7 and did the 200-yard backstroke in 2:00.9 to better the former mark of -- by Gaye Stratten of Tor- onto. Mahony swam the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.6, toppling the 1:02.8 record owned by Steve Rabinovitch of Montreal.
