'ative TO BE RE-BUILT AND NEW WING ADDED GROUP OF HOME LEAGUE MEMBERS WITH MAJOR MARSLAND RANKIN 1959 - 6( CHALLENGE TO OSHAWA Salvation Army By MARY WILLIAMS Oshawa Times Staff The $30,000 birthday gift the Salvation Army Home League is giving Canadians as a cen- tennial project holds special in- terest for people in Oshawa. The money will be used to build a new wing and to reno- vate the present building, which provides a home for Indian © girls attending high school in 4 Prince Rupert, British Colum- ; bia. The idea was the brain-child © of Major Fred Lewis, who was stationed in Oshawa, prior to 1964, when he was transferred to Prince Rupert to become Divisional Commander of that area, The area's boundaries are Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, on the north; Ocean Falls and 100 Mile House, 'on the south; Prince Rupert on the coast and Prince George 500 miles eee east of Prince Rupert. In this area Major Lewis has the over-sight scattered Indian villages. They have their own schools provided by the Indian Affairs Branch of the Government and the Salva- tion Army provides the teach- ers. At these schools the pupils can only go as far as Grade 6. Any child wishing to advance beyond this must leave his or a larger centre. As civilization has gradually come to these remote areas, more and more Indian children are seeking higher education. Many are finishing high school and going on to university. HOME FOR NATIVE GIRLS The lodge to be renovated was opened in 1947 to meet the needs of the native girls. On} opening it housed six girls. Al total of 153 girls have com- pleted their education while) living there. Many have be- come teachers, deaconesses, Salvation Army officers, secre- taries and stenographers.
