iN to - e e oY S. s nm e- @ I in d 5 ly it se y id ve WHITBY DAY - BY - DAY Whitby OPP Detachment Records Fifth Fatality WHITBY (Staff) -- The Whit- by Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police recorded its fifth fatality of 1967 in an otherwise quiet week. Officers patrolled a total of 17,000 miles and checked 139 drivers. Of these 51 were warned and 72 charged. There were only 13 accidents, including the fatal- ity, during the week. One acci- dent charge was laid. Domestic complaints of var-) ious types made up the major part of 37 general occurrences recorded. There were two break and enter and one malicious damage cases reported, One stolen car was recovered after being Involved in a hit-and-run accident but the driver aas not apprehended. Six persons were charged with liquor offences; \three of them were minors. The coming Easter weekend will be a three-day holiday for some and a four-day holiday for others. Drivers are urged by the OPP. to drive carefully to for everyone, | | All available personnel of the Whitby OPP detachment, and other detachments, throughout the province, will be on duty in an attempt to reduce violations and accidents. United Church Women Plan Bridge A poem "Joys of Easter", opened the meeting of the St. Mark's United Church Women, Unit 9, at the home of Mrs. Eileen Clarke. Mrs. J. Goodlet gave the scripture reading followed by a served, Mrs. Keith Lunney will assist the hostess. The general meeting will be held April 4 with P. Walcott, director of shelter workshop training centre, as the speaker. Miss Ila Newton, deaconess, will address the group on her film strip on Gethsemane. Guide And Brownie Rally Planned Commissioner Mrs. Harvey Whale, at the Whitby District Girl Guide Association meet- ing, thanked those who assisted in making the card party a success. If you have a daughter wishing to 'join Brownies it is recommend- ed you register early. A report from the Brownie badge secretary was read and discussed. Representatives present voiced willingness to help with testing. The opinion was that it is necessary to involve as many testers as possible both to ac- quaint people with the require- ments and to let Brownies meet more people. A Guide and Brownie Rally is being planned for May 27 at Greenwood Conservation Park, and a Church parade for Oct. 1. Sacrament Celebrated At St. Mark's The Sacrament of the Lord's Supper was celebrated at St. Mark's United Church Sunday morning. The communion me- ditation was entitled 'The Light and The darkness" and the choir sang the anthem 'The Palms". Easter weekend services at 8t. Mark's will include the Good Friday Service, Easter Morning Communion, Easter Praise at the usual hour of worship. In the afternoon an Easter Family gathering will be held when the junior and intermediate' choirs will sing. Preparations are under way for the annual collection of good used clothing to be shipped over- seas to aid in the church's re- lief program. Bundles of good used clothing may be left at the church hall. WHITBY PERSONALS The "Irish Night' was well attended at St. Andrew's Pres- byterian Sunday School Hall. St. Andrew's Women's Group 3 sponsored the event. Rev. W. J. S. McClure acted as master of ceremonies and introduced the participants. The program started with a hilarious. play entitled "Mrs O'Leary's Cow'. Taking part were: Miss Susan Wainwright, Mrs. David. Kernohan, Mrs. Donald Butts, Mrs. Lloyd Dafoe, Mrs. George Martin, Mrs. A. K. Craig, Mrs. David McRobert, Mrs. Ernest Collin- son, Miss Marguerite Ross and Mrs. William Avent. The Melody- Chords directed by Mrs. Laverne Rousseau ren- dered several selections. Mrs. Connelly's pupils gave Irish dances. Other forms of enter- tainment were violin solos, piano duets and community singing. A St. Patrick's lunch- eon was served. The Sinclair Home = and School Association held a suc- cessful night of cards in charge of Mrs. Archie Campbell and her committee. Winners were: William Woodward, Winnie Branton, Stella Horvath, Max- ine Brooks, Mrs. Thomas . Greer, Arthur Woodell, Marion William Haynes, Elsie Gatchell, Dan Batherson, Mrs. C.
