18 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, March 22, 1967 PRELUDE TO EASTER Ill Large Squad Sent To Arrest Jesus By GEORGE W. CORNELL AP Religion Writer A contingent of Roman in- fantrymen formed in the dark quadrangle outside the Fort- ress of Antonia barracks ad- joining the Temple in Jerusa- lem. At an order from the captain, they moved out in column of twos, They were on a night detail to arrest Jesus, presumed leader of a ring of Jewish troublemakers. A sizable detachment was assigned to the job. The Gos- pel of John uses a Greek term applied to a cohort--600 men--and while that many would seem unlikely, military prudence would call for a force sufficient to deal with any resistance. Native defiance was com- mon in that land, seething with hostility to foreign rule, and occupation troops re- peatedly took to the sword to wipe out pockets of rebellion. Amid the uncertainties that night, a strong unit was dis- patched. It was known that some of Jesus' men were armed. A defector, Judas Iscariot, guided the Roman _legion- naires. With him were some officers of the Temple, where he had brought his informa- tion, and whose leadership was subject to the procurator, Pontius Pilate. STAFF WAS SCORNED Its staff of Sadducean col- laborators were in liege to the pagan conqueror, and accord- ing to the ancient Jewish historian Josephus, were scorned as such by the com- mon populace. In modern terms, Judaea was a foreign-occupied police state. It had its provincially in- ducted front of co-operating civil and religious servants but it was ruled by a Western potentate and held in check by military force and occa- sional onslaughts of terror- ism. This was the regime that brought the case against Jesus. And its Roman garri- son, under command of Pon- tius Pilate, sent the battle- strength patrol, armed with javelins and broadswords, to arrest Him. Jesus and His men had come to Jerusalem five days earlier, six days before Pass- over which started the follow- ing sunset on the 15th of Nisan--March-April. They had arrived after two months of hiding in the hills to the north. A clamorous throng had welcomed Jesus, spreading green fronds and sprays of willow and myrtle in His path as He rode a burro down the hill and into the city. GHOUTED 'HOSANNA' "Hosanna!"' they shouted. "Save now, Lord! Blessed be He who cometh in the name of the Lord!" Months before, the govern- ment had decided to get rid of Him and the fervent reception only intensified official efforts te get it done. He wept over the city. "Would that even today you knew the things that make for peace." Devout Pharisees, recognizing the danger of the public acclaim, urgently warned Him, "Teacher, re- buke your disciples." | But He seemed unperturbed. "T tell you, if these were si- lent, the very stones would ery out.' To excited crowds in the streets, He proclaimed, "He who sees Me sees Him who sent Me... . I have come as light into the world... ." Throughout the ensuing four days, the Rome-authorized lo- cal administration "sought a way to destroy Him." But they "feared the people," the gospel accounts state re- peatedly. 'They sought to arrest Him, but feared the multitude." As in the past, the support of the Jewish populace pro- tected Him. DREW THE POOR It was the ordinary folk, the nameless poor and exploited of that oppressed land, that NEED FUEL OIL ? CALL PERRY 723-3443 DAY OR NIGHT were drawn spontaneously to Him, fascinated, hoping, won- dering if not fully understand- ing. "And the great throng heard Him gladly." He Himself, as if pressing purposely toward a predes- tined finish, acted and spoke with a bolder flourish than ever, excoriating the influen- tial factions, the Sadducees, Pharisees, scribes, lawyers. "Woe to you, blind guides . .. hypocrites . . . white- washed tombs. Beware of the scribes who. . . devour wid- ow's houses and for a pre- tence make long prayers." He aimed a subtle barb at Caesar, worshipped as a god by an imperial law which could not be enforced in Judaea although blood-letting attempts were made to do so. Render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God the things that are God's," Jesus said. And he foresaw the shatter- ing revolution a generation ahead. GAZED A TCITY He gazed over the city. "Do you see these great build- ings?" The Temple rose in glistening magnificence, and elsewhere bulked the spires, turrets and walls of Roman baths, theatres and the hippo- drome, scene of brawling gladiatorial bouts and heathen entertainments. "There will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down." He stormed into the Temple court, driving out the sacri- ficial animal dealers and money - changers for head taxes. The Sanhedrin, a religious- civic counsel dominated by the Sadducees who were in league with the Roman procu- rator, met and planned an arrest "'by stealth" so as not to cause a "tumult of the people." Pontius Pilate was ada- mant on that point. He had been plagued enough by pub- lic' protests and disorders, once when he paraded Roman standards in the Temple court and again when his financial extortions started a riot quelled only by his troops. WATCHED SITUATION At the time of the Passover, when the vast human in- flux made disturbances more likely, he had brought mill- tary reinforcements from his headquarters in Caesarea and stayed on hand himself to watch the situation.
