Ne A THE OSHAWA TIMES, Saturday, March 11, 1967 SPORTS BEAT' By Eric Wesslby Times Sports Editor * OSHAWA GENERALS play their final game of the season at Civic Auditorium tonight and fcr some it will be a nos- talgic evening. It will be the last game of junior hockey for quite a few of the players and many thoughts will prob- ably pass through their minds as they stand for the national anthem prior to the game. For some, it's been some- thing to remember. Few hockey players get an oppor- tunity to compete in a Memorial Cup final, as most Of the retiring players did last season. SOME WILL go on to fur- ther hockey glory, but others will drift away from the game, into varied careers. Some might even make their professional hockey debut this season. But no matter where they go, they'll be remember- ed by Oshawa sports fans. When next season rolls along, eneral manager and coach ed O'Connor will have to fill the skates of goalkeeper Ian Young, defencemen Barry Wilkins, Nick Beverley, Chris Roberts, Bob Edmunds, for- wards Bill White, Bill Scott, Chris Hayes, Danny Sandford and George Babcock. Rocky Farr will return to London Nationals for playoffs. TONIGHT, THOUGH, will be Ian Young's night. The popular young goalkeeper, who appeared destined for a sure spot in the National Hockey League until injured in January, will receive the Auto Workers Credit Union Trophy as Generals' most valuable player this season. He dominated a league which included some pretty fair goalkeepers' and there was no disgrace in being second fid- dle to Young. IT'S STRANGE how hockey goes. Two weeks ago, Oshawa hockey followers were saying "Oh, well, if Generals don't make the playoffs we'll still SPORTSCOPE TODAY HOCKEY OHA Junior 'B' Lakeshore League: Kingston Frontenacs vs Oshawa Crushmen; 5th game of 4-out-of-7 semi-final series; at Civic Auditorium, 2:00 p.m. OHA Junior 'A' League: be able to watch Oshawa Crushmen and Whitby Lasco Steelers."" Suddenly, Crush- men could be finished before Generals (they play Kingston here this afternoon) and Las- cos could get bounced from the Metro Junior "B" League playoffs Sunday night in Dixie. WHILE IT'S true Generals finished in the Ontario Hock- ey Association Junior "A" cellar this year, with the ex- ception of possibly four games, they've given Oshawa fans some _ enjoyable eve- nings. The junior league this season experienced its great- est race ever. With the league expanding to 10 teams next year, interest will be even greater, and competition for a playoff spot tougher. TORONTO MAPLE Leafs have a chance to take second place tonight in that hectic National Hockey League race as they face New. York Ran- gers in Toronto. Rangers are slumping and Leafs have been playing at a tremendous clip recently, cutting into that once healthy Ranger lead. And tomorrow night, in Chi- cago, George 'Punch' Im- lach plans his return to the bench. He usually waits for an out of town game to start a goalkeeper who has been injured and being a_super- stitious fellow, "Punch" prob- ably wants to follow the same procedure with the coach. BEFORE THE National Hockey League season, open- ed, most experts were con- vinced the only sure bet was that Montreal would finish first. Fortunately there weren't too many people around willing to put up money that this wouldn't -»hap- pen, but if only you'd known.
