Our number of high school and college graduates is in- creasing faster than our popula- tion. Naturally, we should ex- pect reading of books by aduits to increase as fast as the size of classes graduating from high school and college, However, the number of books read by adults in the United States ranks low among the civilized nations, and at the bottom of the sending Sagtes + speaking countries. This is in spite of our shorter hours of work and greater leisure time. In the elementary grades, the teachers seem to be doing a pretty good job of stimulating children to read books. for pleasure. Discerning parents and the growing army of baby sitters have helped increase the number of books to be read to children before entering school. WRY STOP? ; But as I asked in an earlier column, why do so many youths when they are about 13? Why do so few of those finishing high school and college read any books thereafter? Obviously the high school and college have not inspired their students to read much more than is required in their courses. With increasing leisure time, children and parents might make more music and enjoy more good music. They might enjoy more drama and create more in this direction. They might find more enjoyment at creating things for fun with their hands, developing home work- shops. Third, refuse to be stopped from exploring new possibilities simply because you are afraid you will be ridiculed for having |made a wrong turn in the first |place. | Fourth, if the missed oppor- jtunity you think you should have requires further training, find some way to get this through night classes, scholar- ships, family help or what you will.
