(AP)-- The AFL-CIO replaced Walter Reuther, Auto Workers 'Union president, on its top policy- making executive council Fri- day, electing President William Pollock of the Textile Workers Union. Reuther quit the executive council several weeks ago com- plaining about AFL-CIO leader- ship under President George Meany. Reuther said the 13,500,- 000 - member labor federation had become complacent. The Auto Workers Union is expected to decide in April whether td withdraw from the AFL-CIO. Pe Check Deer SUDBURY (CP)--The depart- ment of lands and forests Fri- day began a check on deer herds in this district, fearful that the survival rate may be cut because of a snowfall that is approaching a seasonal re- cord. The heaviest snowfall since 1948 was 121.4 inches in the winter of 1950-51. The snowfall to date this winter has been 99.1 inches, more than eight feet. Jim Sheppard, assistant fish and wildlife supervisor, said in an interview that the next two weeks will be critical. "Deer will have a hard time unless we get. a quick thaw," he said. 'It depends on how much more snow we get and how cold it is." Substantial evidence of exten- sive starvation is not expected to be available until the middle of March.
