TEN-CENT LIMIT; ACES, DEUCES THIS IS FOR. FUNSIES, ISN'T IT? ~& = C7 YOUR HEALTH When Cousins | Dear Dr. Molner: I read your jarticle on first cousins marry- jing. I married my cousin 20 years ago. We have six wonder- ful children who know nothing jof our relationship. Should I tell them? Will their children -be normal? Two of my children are slow-learners. Could this be because of the parents? Do I owe my children an explana- tion--W. - We know that a risk is in- volved when cousins marry, but the risk will be different for each couple. It depends on their genes, which control the char- acteristics of the children, and it also depends on precisely how the genes combine when each child is conceived. If a weakness of some sort exists in both parents, the chances are great that the weakness .will be intensified in the children. But favorable characteristics may also be reinforced. The danger comes down to this: We all have our strong and our weak points. "Many weak ones are what we call re- cessive characteristics which die out from generation to gen- eration, unless bolstered by combining with a similar trait in a spouse. You should, and I am sure will, be watchful to see that anything is to be gained by telling them that you and their father are cousins. It might worry them, and what possible good could it do? So long as they are fine children, that's all that really counts. Dear Dr. Molner: With social diseases said to be so common, can you suggest how we can account for the fact that, of dozens of young couples we heard @f @ eownle being Risk For Couple By JOSEPH G. MOLNER, MD Marry in marriage plans by discovery of such disease?--R.W.F. Maybe you know only people who are (a) always lucky, or (b) well behaved. : It's more likely, . however, that some of these people did have venereal diseases at some time or other but had treatment before applying for a marriage licence. There's no question about the prevalence of these diseases. The proof is undeniable and frightening. Unquestiona- bly, there are more cases than are reported in the statistics. Dear Dr. Molner: Is a lump anywhere other than in the breast anything to be alarmed about? I have had one on my thigh for several months, but hate to go to my family doctor if I'm making something out of nothing.--Mrs. S.A. A lump anywhere means something abnormal, but we are particularly suspicious when the breast is involved be- cause the incidence of breast cancer is so high. While the lump on your thigh probably is nothing serious, the safe thing is to ask your doctor. It is, in any event, a handy excuse for a periodic checkup: OLD CIVILIZATION Untold generations before Christ, the Maya people of Mexico's . Yucatan _ peninsula were slowly evolving in stone, pottery and fabrics a decora- tive style which was to become one of the great esthetic tri- umphs of the-human race. JAY BECKER «Top Record-Holder in Masters' Individual Championship Play) BIDDING QUIZ You are South, both sides vulnerable. Three notrump. One im- portant principle of bidding is that if you. underbid . at one point, you try to correct it later on by making a strong bid -to compensate for the pre- vious underbid. Similarly, if you. make an early overhold, you compensate for it by bid- ding in minimum terms there- afte\-. Thus, the two club bid in this sequence clearly understated our 'values, though it was tech- nically the correct rebid. Con- sequently, when partner now bids two diamonds, we cannot properly bid only two notrump becatise that woul dsound as though we were. responding only-'in obedience to a forcing bid. We have the values for three notrump and we should state this in unmistakable terms. & 2. Two spades. Here we have a minimum opening and we should treat it as such by re- bidding in minimum terms. This is best accomplished by bidding two spades over two diamonds. | It would be wrong to bid |three diamonds instead. This would raise the level needless- ly and at the same time show a preference for diamonds over epades based on strength rather than length. The basic aim in bidding is to play in ithe longest trump suit, not nec- essarily the strongest. North may easily have more spades than diamonds; he cannot have more diamonds than spades or he would have bid them first. 3. Two hearts. This bid {s not made in the expectation that North can support hearts. The purpose is simply to caution partner that we Have neither spade nor diamond support, and that we also have an aversion to notrump play even though ail four suits are ac- counted for. 4, Four diamonds. Our hand zooms in value once North bids two diamonds, and we have to do more than simply raise to three diamonds to show the newly discovered values. ° The opening club bid was of the minimum class, and the two club bid more or less iden- tified this, but once North bids diamonds our hand takes on a brand new complexion. The singleton heart, the fitting king of spades, and the excellent trump support all indicate that not only a game but a slam is imminent. The best way of expressing these values is by a vigorous raise in diamonds. Auto Driver Boosts Record DAYTONA BEACH, Fia. (AP)--Paul Goldsmith, driving a .1964 Plymouth Sportsman, boosted the modified-Sportsman speed record by nearly 10 miles an hour in qualifying 'Wednes- day for the second annual Day- |tona Beach 300-mile race. He averaged 179.551 miles an hour for two laps at Daytona International Speedway where the 300 will be run Saturday. The previous mark, set in 1964 by the late Glenn Roberts, was 170.470 m.p.h, It was eclipsed Wednesday by three other drivers, Lee Roy Yar- brough, at 177.637; Jim Paschal at 174, and Darrell Dieringer, 171.804. Qualifying time trials contin- ued today for 44 positions in the 50-car field. The remaining six places will be settled by a qual- ifying race after the time tri- als. Wednesday's qualifiers, any of whom may be bumped by faster times if they are re- corded today, include Don Bied- erman, Port Credit, Ont., 1964 Chevrolet Sportsman, 149.850.
