Whether the disease is mild or severe, either nicotine or alcohol can be harmful to a diabetic, Note that I say "can Drinking adds needless calor- ies, and a diabetic has to count his calories. Diabetes means that the patient can assimilate only a limited amount of sugar. He must see to it that he does not consume more sugar than his body, bolstered by insulin or diabetes pills, can use up. Almost any type of food, even though it contains no sugar, can be the equivalent of it. Some portion will be converted into blood sugar, and it is the total amount of blood sugar which concerns the diabetic. Carbohydrate is converted readily and in large part into blood sugar. The same is true of alcohol. Every drop of alco- that a diabetic drinks means that he must curtail, in his eating, enough food to equal the alcohol in terms of calories. Obviously many mild diabetics take an occasional drink, and probably does them no harm. But just as obviously, regular consumption of alcohol has: its penalties. Varying amounts of alcohol can upset the stomach. When it in either vomiting or diarrhea, it can lead a diabetic into serious trouble, acidosis, which is one of the major emergencies occurring in this ACROSS 3. Nicotine is no- torious for causing spasm of the Nicotine, Alcohol Can Harm Diabetic By JOSEPH G, MOLNER, MD lems, such as vascular disease of the extremities, eyes and heart, anything which con- stricts circulation is inviting trouble. Yes, I am aware that many diabetics use tobacco, but it is doing them no good. Another ailment traced to to- bacco (and relieved by discon- tinuing its use) is amblyopia, a disturbance in visual acuity. It is one more factor which ought to be remembered by diabetics because their. disease can so easily impair eyesight. Dear Dr. Molner: Please de- scribe ichthyosis and is it true that a victim of this disease cannot be vaccinated against smallpox because it may be fatal?--F.T. Ichthyosis is a skin disorder, often appearing early in child- hood, the skin becoming dry, rough and scaly. The scales to some extent resemble fish scales. Trunk and extremities usually are involved. The condi- tion tends to improve in warm summer weather. Individuals with this condition can be vaccinated against THE OSHAWA TIMES, 'Wednesday, February 15, 1967 BRIDGE By B. The real test of a partner- ship is its skill in bidding slams. The substantial rewards for accuracy in slam bidding easily justify the concentrated effort required in this highly specialized department of the game. In general, you bid a slam when you think there is better than an even chance of making it. Most slams should be reach- ed by natural bidding, and not by the use of artificial conven- tions. The trouble with Black- wood and similar conventions is that all too often in the search for aces and kings, other im- + |portant factors -- such as how many tricks can be made--are ignored. The most important aim in striving for slams is' to learn whether there are twelve tricks. Bids devoted to ascertaining the number of aces or kings held by a side should not be permitted to interfere with this basic question. South's jump rebid of three clubs shows a hand containing at least 17 points, It asks North to continue bidding unless the diamond bid was based on absolutely minimum values. A raise to four clubs by North would show 8 or 9 points; the actual five club bid indi- cated values beyond that and fas least a mild interest in a slam, The six club bid by South is based on the extra values he has beyond a minimum three club bid and the excellent suit controls as well. Barring exceptionally bad luck, South is sure to make the slam if he plays correctly. He wins the spade lead with the ace, draws two rounds of trumps, ruffs dummy's last spade, and cashes the A-K-Q of diamonds. Even though East shows out on the third diamond, South is bound to make the slam re- gardiess of which oponent has the king of hearts. He simply leads the three of diamonds and discards a heart on it, forcing West to win the diamond and return a heart or yield a ruff and discard. Variety Scores In CYO Action The CYO Bantam and Pee Wee Hockey Leagues both pro- duced a variety of scores, in their schedule action on Sun- day, at the Oshawa Children's Arena, with results ranging from a one-sided 8-1 win to a 2-2 tie. In Bantam League play, St. Mary's whomped Holy Cross 8-1, Wayne Stovell saving his team from the whitewash treat- ment. Charlie Andrasek, Pat Fiontek and Dave Tessur each scored a pair for the winners with John Sledjiewski and Doug Freeman scoring one apiece. St. Gertrude's Bantams de- feated the St. Hedwig's - St. Phillip's Combines 3-1, on two goals by Danny O'Brien and one by Jim McGeown. Terry Donnavon scored for the losers. St. Gregory's won over St. Joseph's, also by a 3-1 count. Len McAvoy scored the goal for St. Joseph's while Mike Brisebois, Bob Linton and Den- nis Grady shared the winners' success. PEE WEE LEAGUE In Pee Wee League action, the best game was between St. Mary's and Holy Cross, where in contrast to their Bantam teams, these youngsters battled to a 2-2 draw. A. Maykut and R. Auber each scored once for St. Mary's while Bert Hoffes accounted for both goals for Holy Cross. Phillip's St. Hedwig's - St. blanked St. Gertrude's Pee Wees 2-0 on goals by Andre Couture and Gerard Donnavan. St. Gregory's thumped St, Joseph's 7-1, with Kevin Con- lin's goal saving St. Joseph's from a shutout.
