TACKLE 1,200 - MILE COURSE Two Oshawa Drivers Enter Winter Rally Twelve hundred miles of snow and polished ice roads await two Oshawa drivers who will be peting in this kend's annual British Empire Motor Club Winter Rally. One of them, Martin Chenhall, of 286 Saguenay St., will be making his strongest bid yet for an overall win. Twice before, in 1966 and 1963, Martin Chenhall took se- cond placings in an event that is lauded as one of North Amer- ica's toughest rally events. On both occasions victory was lost by a few bare penalty Points. This weekend Chenaii will be teaming with Toronto navi- gator Bill Silvera. The pair will be driving a red Corvair enter- ed by the Gorries Chevrolet Team from Toronto. SECOND RALLY The second lecal driver is Dale Neil, of 606 Lansdowne Dr., who will be competing in his second Winter Rally. He will be driving another Corvair navigated by Jerry Pierson, also of Oshawa. Dale Neil is best known for his exploits on the racing track in his green Corvair sedan. The car for this weekend's event is a different one, owned and pre- pared by Mr. Pierson. The two crews will be among 100 starters in this year's Win- ter Rally. They will be up against North America's tough- est and most experienced com- petitors. Starting from Toronto on Fri- day night the rally will take crews on a 1,200 mile loop to Ottawa and back. The finish will be back in Toronto on Sun- day evening. IN TOP 16 Rated among the top 10 rally drivers in the country Chenhall will be making his fifth start in the Winter Rally. He has also competed twice before in the gruelling Shell 4,000 Rally and placed well on both occasions. His Corvair has been set up with special heavy duty suspen- sion to take the bumps and grinds of the rough, ice-rutted roads. Special lighting has been added and winch fixtures added front and back. "It is going to be rough this year," said Mr. Chenhall." The rules of the event have disal- lowed studded tires. This will mean times will be slower and the going rougher. The way the weather has been going we can expect lots of ice. "We are starting in 83rd post- tion. This will mean that by the time we get to the treacherous bits the previous cars are going to have everything polished pret- ty smooth."
