Mallory said "at least about 20' persons were killed Tuesday night in a fire which swept through the fashionable Dale's Penthouse Restaurant atop a 12 - storey apartment building. Mallory said that identifica- tion teams are at work seeking to verify the exact number and identity of those killed. Twelve charred bodies were taken to two Montgomery funeral homes where temporary morgues were established. Among those missing In the wake of the fire are Ed Pepper, former state public service com- mission member, and his wife, and Mrs. Jack Doane, wife of the sports editor of the Mont- gomery Advertiser. FIREMEN TRAPPED At the height of the blaze, several firemen were trapped between floors when an elevator stalled. They escaped by climb- ing one of its supporting cables. The fire, which broke out shortly before 10 p.m., sent flames into the sky the full width of the glass-enclosed res- raurant. Bill White, a dining compan- fon of the Peppers, said he kicked out a window when the blaze started sweeping through the restaurant and led a num- ber of persons to safety on a fenced parapet around the res- taurant. They were rescued by firemen who reached the roof by racing up 12 flights of stairs. Elevators were knocked out of service by the blaze.
