The United Church has or- dained women for about 30 years. The Anglican Church is undecided, partly because of an ecumenical dilemma. "If we accept women in the riesthood, we're setting up a ler between us and Rome e-the church catholic," says Anglican Bishop H. R. Hunt. "Anglicans are traditionally between the United Church and Rome. In the catholic tradition the ministry is not extended, but there is a place for women which is suitable for their sex." Bishop Hunt is suffragan bishop of Toronto and warden of women workers. The Anglican. Church does ordain its deaconesses in a communion service which Bishop Hunt says was estab- lished in 1962 to give the of- fice more status. Broadly, a deaconess may do everything a minister does except admin- ister sacraments. In some areas they serve where a min- on is only occasionally avail- able. UNITED CHURCH FIRM Whatever the Anglican Church decides it must do, certainly there is no 6ug- gestion from the United Church that it will reverse its stand. An editorial in the United Church Observer, the church magazine, summed up the Prevailing attitude: "No office of priest, bishop or Pope should be denied a Christian because she is fe- male," There is occasional public speculation from Roman Catholics on the ordination of women and changes in their role in the church, but the subject is not officially open and it is difficult to get clerical comment. "Women have not been and are not subjects of ordination to the priesthood," was the "no comment" response from the Rev. * Edward Boehler, vice - chancellor of Toronto archdiocese. 'This is based on traditional Catholic doctrine be ee a ev. J. J, Keating expanded a little. He is ya Po of the Roman Catholic English sec- retariat on ecumenism. She is one of the founders in Canada of St. Joan's Alliance, an onganization of Roman Catholic lay women. Miss Wallace says the whole question of women and of the laity generally needs exam- ination in Roman Catholic theology. The alliance will work for this and members intend to write to bishops ask- ing changes in canon law. "We've had 2,000 years of what they call tradition and we call prejudice," Miss Wal- lace says. "There is no ec- clesiastical doctrine now or in the past which prevents women from being ordained." She says one result of the Vatican council has been the setting up of some lay church councils in Roman Catholic parishes, and she is concerned because some of them include no women. "There is a tendency of Ro- man Catholic women to be passive and dependent. The Catholic Women's League has a constitution which says the Savings NOVA SCOTIA. Yes, a mon rou, your children and ever! "Eventually women will be ordained and the ecumenical movement will spur it." JEWS STAND PAT Rabbi Stuart Rosenberg of Beth T edec Congregation, Toronto, says though there is no bar but tradition to a woman becoming a_ rabbi, there is also no discussion of the possibility. He says he does not believe a congrega- tion would accept a woman. There have been some changes in the place of women in the Jewish religious community, but they are com- paratively minor, a reflection of social change. Rabbi Rosenberg says they are largely confined to the Western world and to con- servative and refonm congre- gations. Orthodox practice, for instance, still segregates 'women at a service. One modern change he cites is that women now are teach- ers of religion, once a male preserve. "It is a profession, not a Sunday school thing. Teachers have a bachelor of Jewish pedagogy with a BA. "Of course, it doesn't pay that much, 80 it's now largely @ woman's profession." ~ WEEKEND SPECIAL - le SALE BORDEN'S ICE CREAM 43c Get Second Brick for 1¢ more THIS WEEKEND ONLY BRAEMO Gift and Variety 728-0651 promem, Al yon need to lo is switch to e right kind of flour --- MONARCH SOFT WHEAT FLOUR.
