For Indians SMITHERS, B.C. (CP )-- There's a new badge of honor among hundreds of British Co- lumbia Indians. It's a small blue pin with the word 'Honor' printed on it. It has become the Indians' mark of sobriety. It is worn by those who have taken the pledge. Social workers and ministers say it is making a new life for many. The pledge, taken on a Bible before a priest, is a promise not to consume alcohol for a specific period. Social workers say almost all who have taken the pledge have honored it for periods from three months to two or three years. x The pledge was introduced three years ago in the Smithers, Burns Lake and Babine areas of northern B.C. Smithers wel- fare director Don Beddows and Rev. Stuart Gordon say it is more powerful than the provin- cial interdict law. Jail is no punishment for these Indians, says Father Gor-|¢ The pledge breaks the drink- ing pattern, the Roman Catho- lic priest says. The Indian may turn down a drink, explaining he has taken the pledge, and not be criticized. For some there is also an element of superstition. The Indians will tell you about the man who took the pledge in Burns Lake and later broke it. While drinking he got into a fight, was kicked in the stom- ach and died in hospital. don. PATTERN BROKEN 7,000,000 by 1981 In Metro Father Gordon says the drink- ing pattern of the Indian is a, result of his cultural _back-| ground. When an Indian kills a moose he shares it with the community and they finish it at one time, a practice established because meat would not keep. When they got a jug of wine or liquor they do the same, even if it means a long atretch of solid drinking. quire 100 ocre farm --in King Township with front- age on 400 and Jane Street. --Tremendous future growth potential, D1331 --Partner wonted to help ac- | =----Reply in confidence to Box ish Isles 3-0 in the match in- RED BANK, N.J.
