Today's silver dollar is a de- scendant of the coins first produced in 1520 by a Bohemian known as a joachimsthaler-- the coin of St. Joachim's thal (valley). The coin soon became popular and the Hapsburgs, who ruled the region at the time, recog- nized a good thing and revoked the baron's licence so they could take over the job them- selves. The Bohemian thalers set the silver coins were hall-marked with the word "yefimok" (Joachim) te indicate they were genuine.
