JAY BECKER (Top Record-Holder in Masters' Individual Championship Play) BIDDING QUIZ You are South, both sides vul- nerable. The bidding has been: West North East South 1@ Dble Pass ? What would you bid now with each of the following four hands? 1, @83 9652 $Q074 4Q074 2. 995 WK93 @K87 &KQ842 3. @)4 YQT4S OKQHS 4962 | 4. @5 YQ062 @AIS4 KIOS 1. Two clubs. North's double presumably is based on. at least the values for an opening bid. He may have 14 points, possibly 20 points; there is no way of knowing how many he actually has. Since North is forcing us to bid, we cannot be held re- sponsible for any lack of strength when we respond. With identical values in clubs and diamonds, and a poor hand to boot, it is better to start at the bottom of the ladder in re- sponding. If partner dislikes clubs, he can bid diamonds at the two level. But if we re- sponded two diamonds, there would be no corresponding op- portunity of finding a club fit without going into the three level. 2. Three clubs. We can't very well bid two clubs with both this hand and the preceding one and expect North to know that this time we have a good hand. The usual way of showing strength opposite a double is by making a jump response. In general, such a response is made with hands containing 10 or more high - card points. Of course, when there are attractive dis- tributional features, the require- ments are reduced. 3. Two hearts. Here we lack the strength for a jump re- sponse, but nevertheless we have sufficient high-card values to suggest some possibility of game. We therefore respond in hearts rather than diamonds, despite the difference in texture of the suits, because partner is more likely to bid again over a major suit than over a minor suit, Two hearts is an underbid in the sense that there are values we have not yet ex- pressed, but that is all we can do at the moment. 4. Two spades. This hand fig- ures to make game in one of our three suits, but it is impos- sible to tell which one partner can support best. Instead of trying to guess the right suit by jumping to the three level in that suit, we pass the selection of a trump back to North by cuebidding in spades. Partner cannot really misun- derstand this call, since we would leave the double in if spades were actually our long suit. The two spade bid must YOUR HEALTH Mid-Morning Break Starves Or Stuffs By JOSEPH G. One of our worst outbreaks of trichi q ly be strength-show- ing and must be asking North to choose the trump. Regardless of which suit North selects we raise him directly to game.
