MYERS, PhD Often in this column I have said that when a child lags or fails in a subject as history, geography and the like, he usu- ally is a poor reader. But even some good readers may lag or fail in these subjects, and more especially in spelling, element- ary arithmetic or a foreign language, for another reason. Students may. --not have learned to memorize the main items in a content subject. They may not drive themselves to spell new words over and over often enough while looking at them, or to learn by heart the like history or geography, it is essential for the child while reading from the textbook to practise at turning each para- graph into a sentence or so of his own words. The next .es- sential step is to go over these sentences of his own in order to remember them. While in class he needs to get the meaning. He also needs to observe facts and symbols which are important and then to make himself outside of class "'bone" up on these, mem- orize them by rote. Too often} he and his teacher and parent assume that when he. under- basic number combinations, or stands some items and ideas in new words in the foreign lan-\class he will naturally +remem- guage and the essential items|ber them without effort. in its grammar. Granted that in a subject|remember data uniess he exerts|these items often enough cor-| worth remembering. But usually a student does not some extra-special effort there and out of class to store 'them in his memory. MEMORY GUIDE As the student moves upward through the grades, he does best in class when he not only is sure he understands what is taught, but also takes careful note of all items he will need to practise on outside of class in order to remember them. Perhaps to every pupil it is dis- tasteful to sit and memorize what needs to be memorized. I've often wished that teach- ers in the grades would spend more effort at guiding children to memorize as in their learn- ing to spell. What most 'teach- ers do is to keep testing pupils on what they are supposed to memorize without guiding them in ways of driving themselves to memorize it.
