(AP Wirephoto) Ship Blaze Closes Port SOUTHAMPTON, England (Reuters) -- Fire ravaged the 10,720-ton oll tanker Esso Glas- gow early today after two ex- plosions ripped through the ves- sel as it loaded gasoline at ang oll refinery here. Seven firemen were injured fighting the blaze which forced the closing of Southampton port to--all shipping for four hours. Three other oil tankers berthed . gear the Esso Glasgow were moved out for safety. The fire started just before midnight after the first explo- sion. Five firemen were injured in the second blast at 1:15 a.m. The blaze was reported under control shortly after the second blast, but flared up again later and was not extinguished until 3:45 a.m. REMAINS THREAT A fire department spokesman said the fire could resume be- cause 'the metal aboard the ship was white-hot. An Esso spokesman said the captain and a crew of 40 were on board when the fire started. None were injured. A ship's officer said most of the crew were below decks when: the first blast came. By the time the crew reached the top deck flames were shooting 60 feet into the air. NEW YORK (AP)--The Asso- ciated Press Tuesday night an- nounced its final money offer to the wire-service local of the American Newspaper Guild, proposing a two-year agreement that would pay top newspaper men a minimum of $200 weekly in the first year and $207 weekly in the second. It was rejected by the Guild. The offer was made public after mediator George Papp called an open negotiation ses- sion to let both sides reveal their positions. The Guild immediately fol- lowed with a counter propo;)al which The Associated Press es- , timated to be 80 per cent above the company offer in the first- year cost, and more in the sec- ond year.
