(CP)--Parents are overwhelm- ingly in favor of religious edu- cation in Peterborough's ele- mentary schools, a board of 'ed- ucation poll shows. In a questionnaire returned by 3,667 families, parents spoke out 3,306 to 361 in favor of re- ligious education in the publie schools. They voted 3,256 to 309 in favor of having' the present 'course remain Scripture - cen- tred. Only 317 parents consid- ered the current program of Jit- tle or no value to their children. On the question whether they wanted the Grades 7 and 8 chil- dren taught religion by clergy or teachers, 2,619 parents spoke _ out for clergy, 626 for teachers. An alternative to the present - course mentioned by some of the parents was the teaching of comparative religion including the content, history and cul tural influences of all major re- ligions. Others felt that religious in- struction should only come from church, Sunday schov! and the parents. Suggested improvements of the present program included requests to have pupils attend various places of worship, and that children of non-Christian or agnostic parents should not be made to feel inferior or wrong. Tonks Requests Money Return TORONTO (CP) -- Alderman Christopher Tonks has appijed to Borough of York council for return of $6,000 he paid to the former York Township in 1957 for a closed road allowance on which he built a house. An Ontario Court of Appeal decision in 1965 voided the sale of jand to Mr. Tonks, then York Township reeve, on the grounds that the property had not first been offered to other abutting land owners. The 1965 decision was upheld by the Supreme Court of Can- ada in a November, 1966, deci- sion. In a letter to Borough of York council Tuesday, Mr. Tonks re- quested a refund of the $6,000, saying he didn't understand how the municipality could re- tain both the land and the mohey.
