WHITBY DAY - BY - DAY Road Rate Increase Suggested For County WHITBY (Staff) --'The Stand- ing Committee on Roads an? Bridges in its final report to the 1966 Ontario County Council recommended an 8-6 mill rate for County roads and bridges in 1967 to take advantage of ad- ditional provincial grants. The 8.6 milis would represent an increase of 1.6 mills over 1966 and a further recommenda- tion to reduce the urban rebate to 25 per cent would mean ai extra 3.1 mills on the Whitby Town tax rate, explained Reeve George Brooks. At a county road rate of 7 mills the county would receive $78,000 in provincial grants; while the 8.6 mill rate would return a grant of $629,000. Pickering Township Deputy Reeve Jean McPherson suggest- ed that the roads mill increase coupled with the reduction in the county roads rebate was too rich for her Township's blood and moved that the rate be 7 repairs and asphalt paving patching costs were higher than normal. All winter maintenance equip- ment is now mounted including the new plow and two new sanders purchased this year. The recent heavy rains caused washouts in several locations and deterioration of the primed roads. PAVING | An extensive paving program was carried out in 1966 by the County Roads Dept. A total of about 19 miles of pavement was laid: including over 7 miles of new pavement on roads which were previously gravel. GRADING The largest grading project in the County during the year was the Rama Road, the actual construction of which was paid for entirely by the province. A major project was carried Pap RELY age NTT EET REPRESE WHITBY (Staff) -- Prope representation on Council was recommended for study by the 1967 council by the Special Com: » mittee on County Matters at year-end Ontario County Coun- cil session this week. Several representatives took exception to the study and sug- gested that it was wrong for three municipalities to have the voting power to run the county. A move to delete the study from the report was defeated; but northern county represent- atives: suggested that the study take into account the area and assessments of the northern re- gions. If Council decided to have representation by population, the towns of Whitby and Ajax along with Pickering Township would be in a position to out- voie the rect of the County. RULES OF ORDER Council at its three - day session agreed to the following changes in Rules of Order: "The warden shall call for NT ATION ST é i nominations to fill the longest term of each standing commit: tee. When this term is. filled the warden shall call for nomi- nations to fill the next longest term of each standing commit- tee. He shal continue in the game manner until ali vacan- cies are filled." "A member of any standing committee, wishing to become av member of another standing committee, must. resign from the committee of which he or she is a member prior to elec- tion ar appointment to the other standing committee." SCHOOD BUS SAFETY A resolution requesting stric- ter regulations on school buses was adopted. Council decided that since provincial regulations had been amended providing stricter re- gulations for buses carrying more than 10, students and whereas the pupils travelling in a bus, with a seating capacity of fewer than 10, should have the same safety precautions and Riser SRG ote Cag rom eM Ne Sy Ee NE aly, PT UDY ASKED protection it was resolved that the minister of transport be pe- titioned to amend the regula- tions so that who travel in a school bus, with a seating capacity of fewer than 10, re- ceive the same safety precau- uidis.
