'| | i t 'Two Bandits Lose Lives 'Montreal Bank Robbery , MONTREAL (CP)--Two +an-jon dits lost their lives Monday shortly after robbing an east- end bank and a constable ac- cidentally shot himself in the leg during the investigation, po- lice said. They said the two men were found dead in their car min- utes after attempting to flee from the srene of the robbery-- a branch of the Canadian Im- perial Bank of Commerce at a shopping centre. One had been shot in the chest by a 12 - gauge shotgun while the other apparently ded of injuries suffered when he was dragged by the escaping vehicle as he tried to get in- side, police said. | The dead men were identified as Richard Lortie, 24, and Yvon Dubreuil, 24. DREW PISTOL Police said Jean Rivard, a city police constable, accident- ally shot himself as he drew his gun when a crowd gathered around the car with the two men during the investigation. The constable was taken to hos- pital. : Police said the two men broke into the bank by forcing the glass door shortly after five employees had arrived for work and were counting weekend de- posits. The men used a crowbar to smash through the still-locked door and while one of the men, holding a shotgun, drove the | employees to the rear of the bank, his partner stuffed cash into a cardboard box. - . A few minutes later the pair dashed to the street. As they fled, the man carry- ing the shotgun fell when he slipped on the broken glass, He struggled to the car but his companion had started driving away before the man with the gun could get in. After dragging his companion for about 25 feet, the driver stopped and pulled him into the vehicle. INJURED IN GETAWAY Detectives said it 'was pos- sible the injured man lost his temper and fired at his com- panion or that the shotgun dis- charged accidentally as the in- » jured man was struggling to ~» get into the car. « They said the man with the "= gun apparently died of injuries = suffe when he was run over - > by the car. ~ Found in the car were hoods, "tthe shotgun and a box of " money. An eyewitness told police that man with the gun slipped the glass just in iiout of the bank and from the way he grabbed his leg, he seemed to be severely cut. The first man had reached the car parked by the side en- trance of the bank as the man carrying the gun struggled to his feet. The gun-toting bandit had just made it to the vehicle when he slipped again and was run over by the already-moving vehicle.
