By Eric Wesslby Times Sports Editor A year ago, Oshawa Generals were entrenched In first lace in the Ontario Hockey Association's Junior "A" gue, three points ahead of their closest competitors Niagara Falls Flyers, What a difference a year makes, Today, after 21 games, Generals trail Flyers by two points, They also trail five other clubs and unless some layers start clicking for goals, they are in danger of ing passed by two other teams, BEFORE THE SEASON started, Generals were rated a solid fifth place choice, with such holdovers as goal- keeper Ian Young, defencemen Barry Wilkins, Chris Roberts and Nick Beverley and forwards George Babcock and Bill Little returning, Things have changed, though, Kitchener, Hamilton, St, Catharines. and London have proven stronger than they figured to be, while clubs touted as league power houses, Montreal, Niagara Falls and Toronto, have had more than their share of trouble, GENERALS GOT OFF to a good start, and maybe this lulled a few into a false sense of security, True, they weren't scoring many goals, but everyone was working and threé goals were enough to win with, what with Young proving his right to be billed as the top goalkeeper in the league, Suddenly, however, no one could buy a goal, and even the worst studerit in mathematics knows you can't win if you don't score, no matter who's playing goal for you. In their last six games, Generals have scored eight goals, five coming in one game, In that time, they've surrendered 18. Miracle is how they managed to earn three points in that span, WHERE OTHER CLUBS in the league have one and sometimes two players with more than 10 goals, Generals do not have one, They have only three with more than five. Obviously, there is room for improvement, Coach O'Connor points the finger at centre, where only Bill White has produced with anything resembling junior "A" 'ability, The club lost forwards Bill Heindl, Danny O'Shea and Wayne Cashman from last year's Memorial Cup finalists, and so far, no one has emerged to take up the slack caused by the loss of even one of 'this trio, And no ;one expected a defenceman to come along and replace Bobby Orr as a goal-scorer or play-maker, WHAT'S THE ANSWER? Trade for a centre man? Who 'are you going to offer? Most clubs have junior "B" per- 'formers capable of displaying as much talent around the net as some of the Generals have shown this season, If + O'Connor is forced to trade, you can bet he'll have to give up a valuable performer to get a centre or a goal- 'gcorer, Several players have been offered Generals, but each time a defenceman is the asking price. Maybe Ted will have to deal off such a performer to get what he , wants, GARY YOUNG, who'beats the bushes searching out talent for the Boston Bruins, is travelling this week, and {t's possible he may unearth someone who can help the club. Rick Gerow, the newcomer Generals picked up last week, should help, but he's not going to pull the club up by himself, Some of the players with junior 'A' experi- ence are going to have to pull up their socks, muck in and work a little harder, The league this season is so com- petitive, a club can win three of four games in a row and be right in the thick of the scrap for first place. Maybe the club could borrow that motto, "We try harder," Three members of the Generals have been selected on the Ontario Hockey Association's Junior 'A' All-Star team which will play the Czechoslovakian National team in Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens, Dec, 28. They are goal- keeper Ian Young and defenceman Nick Beverley and Barry Wilkins. Steelers, sensing the pressure of taking over first place all alone, started rather slowly, and as a result, did not show thelr form until almost midway through the initial period, Vipond scored on a three-way passing play with Reid and Lavender to give the home fans their first chance to cheer, O'Donaghue followed with an odd goal at 12:45, with Knapton and Quintillian getting the help- ers. This goal caused consider- able beefing from, the oppos!i- tion, as they claimed that the play was offside, Actually, the goal was shoved into their net by one of their own players, and Poor ciearing by -iie iseas defence allowed the visitors to hit pay dirt at 19:31, Dixie came out storming in the middle frame, and tied the game at 2-2 after 18 seconds as once again the local defence was slow in getting the puck out of its own end, Lavender scored at sels however, and Paterson follow at 15:44 to give Whithy a 42 lead after 40 minutes of action, Steelers showed their usual third period kick as they took a 6-2 lead on goals by Quintil- lian and Reid, before Ego mane aged his tally with less than hy minutes of play remain: ing, JUST TALKING ,.. . mana ger Ivan Davie and g¢oach Cherry were happy fellows fol- lowing the game...
