H. RAMSEY There has been much' schol- larly discussion regarding the futhorship of the Book of Isa- ben the consensus of opinion es ed ing that it was written by at east two--and more probably three--different persons, living bbout two centuries apart. (Chapter 1-9 were undoubtedly ritten by the great prophet Isaiah, for this first portion dif- fers markedly from the second "Chapters 40-55--authorship of hich is disputed; and some cholars ascribe Chapters 55-66, dealing mainly with events of the pee restoration, to yet a third prophet. * Isaiah 53, which forms the basis of today's lesson, is: the pene and deepest chapter of Old Testament, and has pose called the Old Testament "Holy of holies." Its verses, con- taining the prophecy of God's épiritual salvation of Israel and , of all mankind; are the most beloved and pften quoted in the Bible. From very first translation, Chris- ke have been impressed by the finely - drawn characteriza- tion and vivid description of men who would die for their sins unless they had faith in Him and were redeemed by Him. Such seemingly voluntary vicarious suffering, human be- ings being the way they are, would undoubtedly lead to the Anointed One's exploitation and persecution by the unserupu- lous, rich and proud. Looking at this prophecy with Christ in mind, ft is easy to see why Christians are convinced that these verses, written cen- turies before, really pointed to Him as the promised Messiah. Christ bore the chastisement in- flicted by God so that mankind would be made sound and well. We were the ones sick unto death because of our sins, but He took them upon Himself, and His voluntary endurance became the source of our heal- ing. The iniquities of all man- kind were laid upon the Lord,| and in His death, He atoned for em. He submitted, quietly and pa- tiently, to seizure by violent hands, a hurried trial, a sen- tence of unrighteous judgment, and was hustled off to be cruci- fied. His enemies were trium- phant. They had destroyed the influence of a_ troublemaker, closed the mouth of one who challenged their authority, He Christ and His last hours, though it was written centuries before His birth. Being that) "with God, all things are pos-| ible," it would appear not un- asonable, therefore that this rd chapter was written under the guidance of God as a proph- was cut off childless, His name doomed to perish from the memory of men, He was tricken by God as a representa- tive, a substitute for the sins of Book Of Isaiah Said Work Of Three Men i\Man who everlived was re- \jected, persecuted and slain-- not in spite of His goodness but because of it! FORECAST DEATH Centuries before the prophet had said Jehovah's Servant would die among the wicked and make His grave among the rich, Christ died with two con- demned thieves and was buried in the tomb constructed for the wealthy Joseph of. Arimathea. The prophecy cléses with a declaration of the great vic- tories, triumphs and _ glorious consequences that will issue from the voluntary sacrifice of the Servant of the Lord. The Messiah's "seed"' is the spiritual progeny which Christ has be- gotten with the "'travail of His soul."" This spiritual '"'seed" was the chief joy which was set be- fore Him, for the sake of which He endured. the cross. It is the pleasure of Jehovah which shall be brought to a triumphant ac- complishment through His med- itation. Israel would be regath- ered into a new covenant rela- tionship with God, of which His Servant will be the bond, The Gentile world will be illuminat- ed with the knowledge of the) true and living God. Olive) SUNDAY -- 723-6325 By IRVING C, WHYNOT TORONTO (CP) Four years azo the Toronto diocese of the Anglican Church gave one of its priests a new job: Get Anglicans 'and Jews talk- ing together. The aim, Rev. Roland de Corneille said at the time of his appointment, was to en- courage "dialogue--a mutual discussion of problems of the different faiths aimed at de- veloping insight rather than conversion,"' Father de Corneille has been talking ever since, al- most with missionary zeal although that probably is the description he'd like least since he takes great pains to emphasize the absence of any conversion motives. Even so, some Toronto Jews aren't convinced; others are reserved; some see hope in the program for a better inter- faith understanding. Father de Corneille isn't dismayed. "Af- ter 2,000 years of persecu- Discussion Of Problems.- Seeks Deeper Insight WRITES BOOK He has already brought thousands of Christians and Jews together for talks in what he calls 'this new rela- tionship." And while there are some Anglicans as well as Jews French army. He: studied in the U.S. and nada and worked as a statistician and advertising man before set- tling in the ministry. Christians and Jews; Dia- logue sets out the guidelines Father de Corneille uses in his study sessions with Angli- can lay groups, PRAISED BY AUTHOR He tells expertly the long story, of Jewish persecution, much of it in. the name of Christianity, asks some searching' questions and. then leaves the Anglican layman to find his own answers, That, hopefully, would be in Chris- tian-Jewish dialogue, : Author Arnold Edinborough, an Anglican Jayman who took part in the first dialogue under the program, writes in The Canadian Churchman, na- tional newspaper of the Angli- can Church; "T can testify that it works. Through such personal inter- changes there also follows the intellectual working out of the framework which can fit Christianity into the Judaic tradition," How do the Jews feel about it all? Four Toronto rabbis, re- served about the project when it was announced four years ago, haven't changed their opinions since then. Here's what they said then, and what they say now: Rabbi Bernard prec 1962: "I have a feeling that this 'in effect is another more subtle conversion attempt and Jews should be wary." Now: "There is an honest attem) among the more liberal ele- menis of the chureh to come, to an understanding with» are still ' 1 approach Judaism, but w wary of the gene' of conversion of the church," Rabbi Walter Wurzberger-- 1962; 'I feel that a mass movement involving Jaymen simply would be another mis- sionary effort even if it had anew name." It's impos- sible to translate the faith commitments of one religion to another," WELOOMES APPROACH Rabbi Gunter Plaut--1962; "T welcome this new ap- proach. .. . Religion has been a divisive force for too long."
