Each of them finds some: thing in sports, but a few girls find much more. "I find myself in sports," says Jackie Hendriks, "I can forget everything else, They re- lieve a lot of school tension and they're a real 'pick-me-up when I'm bored," says the Denis O'Connor student, Jackie has an award of merit in swimming and has been a life guard and instructor at a summer camp for youngsters at Haliburton, She has also re- ceived awards for basketball and bowling. Bonnie Anderson of Eastdale says she gets so nervous be- fore a track and field meet, she "gets sick," Bonnie, who calls herself a specialist in sprints and dashes, says she set a record for the six-yard dash in grade four and then the 60 and 100-yard dashes in grade nine. "Track teaches co-ordination, poise and grace," says Bonnie. 'That's important to a girl." Bonnie says team sports teach a girl that she is not the only person in the world but rather, she learns to co- operate with others, Balance - beam enthusiast, Nancy Bevan of McLaughlin, wants to major in physical edu- cation at Western University and perhaps teach in Oshawa schools, Chosen the outstanding ath- lete of her school for the past two years, Nancy attributes her keen interest in gymnas- tics to a helpful gym teacher. "Sports help a person break away from the regular routine of school," says Nancy. Jill Nicols, a Bowmanville High student, has included sports in her future but she doesn't plan to be a phys-ed teacher. "When I get married, I will take a part-time job teaching) Loung children to swim," she said.
