TELL YOU WHAT-= FOR ANCTHER TEN DOLLARS TLL YOUR HEALTH Phlebitis Differ From Hard Arteries By JOSEPH G, MOLNER, MD Dear Dr. Molner: Please ex- plain the difference between hardening of the arteries and phlebitis. I had phlebitis in my leg following an operation. Sometimes the two middle fingers on one hand lock closed and I have to open them with the other hand. I wonder if this is from hardening of the aripr- jes or phlebitis. My legs also burn, I am 72.--Mrs, J, F. Phlebitis and hardening of the arteries are quite different. As we grow older, we all have some degree of hardening of the arteries, a thickening of one type or another of the walls. This may retard circulation. The degree of hardening is what matters. If it is severe, we have trouble. If it is not, it is just something we have to put up with, like gray hair and wrinkles. Phlebitis does not involve the arteries. It is inflammation of a vein wall, sometimes from an injury, It also retards circula- tion in the affected area by impeding the return flow of blood. ¥ Hardening of the arteries may interfere with the delivery of blood to the tissues. The burning sensation in your legs could, indeed, be a 1 of hardening of the arteries. Sometimes medication can give relief, so discuss this with your doctor. As to the locking fingers, that would be a problem involving the joints, or cramps, and would have nothing to do with either the condition of your arteries or veins. My principal thought is to note whether this tends to occur when you are tired or cold. Avoiding too/alkali to too much acid. Dear Dr, Molner: How many Mrs. J. T. He says no, but I say yes. --Mrs. J. W. 8. . Let's put it this way: It can be harmful, and I consistently recommend against taking soda habitually unless prescribed by your physician, There are cer- tain conditions in which alkaliz- ing the system is important. The digestive tract is sup. posed to be somewhat acid. In fact, a small amount of dilute hydrochloric acid is one of the necessary digestive juices. Alkali (soda being one) neu- tralizes acid and 'can, in suffi- cient quantity, actually inter- fere with digestion. If too much acid is neutral- ized, the human body, in its logical way, will try to produce more. Hence you can have an irritating swing from too much much strain and keeping your) Why does your husband take|soda, he insides. By heap Bye with a may hands from being chilled mayjbaking soda anyway?
