As I am not aware of any statement being made by any such body as the Oshawa Ministerial Association, I attach my own personal state- ment of what the Church is say- ing, and has always said, re- apn Sunday. I know that it pular, and for that rea- son unlikely to be published in full, yet I cannot do otherwise See Our Exciting Selection of CHRISTMAS For the BOATING Enthusiast !! @@®@ \' OSHAWA YACHTHAVEN LIMITED Harbor Road off Simcoe S$. -- 723-8186 @ Log Books, Porallel Rules, Course Protractors @ Life Jackets, Composses, Speedometers @ Depth Finders, Tachometers @ Snow Cruisers @ Evinrude Outboard Motors... 1966 Models at Big Sevings some new @ Lown Boy Power Mowers, from $75. |cause anyone to labour on that than state it, The desire for commercial- ized sport to be permitted by law seems to be quite popular, but 'certain questions come to mind which we cannot ignore without grievous harm to us all. Why is it that man, given to 'ollowing his -natural inclina- tions, is fundamentally un-| happy? Why is it that the ma-| jority of the people of this city think that it only needs com- mercialized sport to make Sun- day a happy day? Why is it that those who insist upon their 'freedom' to enjoy watching sports do not extend that same freedom to those many people who will inevitably have to work on Sundays to provide this enjoyment? | Sunday is for the recreation jof all, not some. It is not sur- | prising that those who have not learned the art of living should jfind Sunday boring. Commer-} }cialized sports will not cure! jthat. It is not surprising that |those of us who protest against jcommercialized sports on Sun- days should be called bigots; as if it were only a matter of getting our own way! There are basic truths which junderlie human happiness. |They are not matters of mere |opinion; they are incontraver- table and eternal. We can ac- cept them or reject them but we cannot change them. One of these truths is, 'Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath day. Six days shalt thou labour and do all that thou hast to do; but the seventh day is the Sab- bath of. the. Lord thy God.' (Exodus 20:8ff. Deut. 5:12ff). This sixth commandment goes on to say that we must not day. Regarding public opinion, it is written, "Enter ye in at the| Strait gate; for wide is the gate| and broad is the way that lead- eth to destruction, and many there be that go in thereat: be- cause strait is the gate and nar- WRITE... servative: Party all have to be bilingual, row is the way which leadeth to life (note that) and few there be that find it." (Matt. 7:18ff), This is undoubtedly an unpopu- lar saving. but those who have found the way.to life know it to be true, But let those who outwardly appear to be Christians, but make no attempt to be known as such, heed Christ's. words, "Not everyone that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven." (Matt. 7:21). What could be plainer? As Kierkegaard once said, "It is so hard to believe because it is so hard to obey'. People do not want to obey; they don't see why they should, yet it is plain to see, not only in history, but all around us today, that dis- obedience is spiritual suicide, Yours sincerely, REV. JOHN D. OSBORNE 64 Greta Street, Oshawa. SPEECH IN FRENCH Mr. Editor; At the City Hall forum last week, candidate Marks ad- dressed the audience in French for part of his speech, I have never known this to happen before. Surely everyone listen- ing could understand: English. What about the Italian, Polish, German and Ukranian and other ethnic groups. who far outnumber the French? As one born of ethnic parents I learned English as a child and am proud to speak English in an English speaking country. If we are to unite our country and not divide it we must not show favoritism to one minority group, It seems odd that Mr. Marks who is Secretary of the Con- in Oshawa| didn't know that MP Mike Starr a week or so ago called for scrapping the Bilingual and Bi- cultural Royal Commission and called it a. great waste of 6 million dollars. The Ontario Health, Dr. Dymond said that Medicare advertising was not printed in French as less thah 1% per cent of the entire popu- lation of Ontario could read) only French, Yesterday, I noticed'a mail truck in Oshawa with the words Royale Poste and Mail -Royale botth on the driver's side and} not one word in English. No doubt if Mr. Marks is elected the city hall staff' will and think of the cost of re-lettering Minister of city hall and all those yellow) jears and trucks. Yours: truly, J. De Silva) SUNDAY SPORTS. }190 Nonquon Mr.- Editor: Many people are puzzled why SPAIN Bt A a m HOWLAND Just a few years ago a of the world's leading brewers . . . from Canada, with the hit the spot with beer-drinkers all would be brewed to the same exacting Belgium, Austria, Sweden and Portugal... got together idea of brewing a beer so good and so right that it would the world ...a beer that rds wherever it was sold, When they had the brew they gave it a name. International }cannot, is it that it appears to many people a necessity to have Sun- day Sports, whereas our fore- fathers worked six days a week enjoyed their sports, and never thought of having them on Sun- day. To-day we are having more and more shorter work weeks, many have. Wednesday or Saturday off work, yet we are more and more cluttering the one day a week (wherein God asked us to keep it Holy unto Him in worship and rest) with sports, labor in factories and many social activities which people would like to par- take in but because of their re- spect and honor, to God's Word We respect doctors, nurses and other deeds of mercy being carried on when- ever the need arises, but run- ning factories which could be shut down. for a-day. has result- ed in men failing to receive pro- motions because of their God given conviction and kept others from social activities. The main question is: do we honor, respect and -- believe God's word? Do we intend to obey it? The vote Monday in Oshawa will be another indica- tion and trend in our society. The breakdown of morals, the fami. crime and corruption is|® largely the result of disbelief and ' disobedience to God's word, with the retult that | sports and social activities are} being corrupted such as hap-| pened recently in Vancouver's! Grey Cup Parade. Those in charge of sports had better ban liquor from all celebrations or the public will ban major sports activities. I appreciate and en- joy clean sports and games as you do, The other day I asked my boy, Do you know of any boys in school that do not go to church or Sunday School? His reply was, dad, most of them go, a few do not go anywhere|~ and most of them are in trouble with the police. Is it not time that we re- affirmed our faith in God and His word by returning to the God of our Fathers by simple faith and obedience? Let us, as a nation, a city, keep our dig- nity, honor and respect by keep- ing the work day to six days a| week, keep the one day as a day to worship God, rest, relax, Thursday that Jack Tramiel accumulated more than $500,000 worth of stock in Commodore Business Ltd, between 1959 and 1963. counsel, modore's board of directors.
