Shortest Skirts, Coast To Coast Found In Ottawa, Quebec City By MARGARET NESS The shortest skirts on Cana- dian streets are seen in Ot- tawa and Quebec City. This is a distinct impression gained on a coast-to-coast fashion tour this fall, And if you'd like to specu- late about the reasons, it may be that in Ottawa--a civil service city where women outnumber men -- the mini- skirt is a way of catching the eye of choosy males. As for Quebec, it's the heart of French Canada and the women of that part of the country have long prided themselves on their ready ac- ceptance of the newest edict from Paris, It was in Quebec City that a quick answer was provided for a question that applies directly to Canada, What hap- pens to a mini-skirt in cold weather? You put on a mini- skirted coat, The trip across the country showed that mini-skirts are even being worn by definitely over-30 women, Mainly, how- ever, knee-clearing skirts are confined to teen-agers, Most Canadian women have raised their skirts only fractions dur- ing the last two short-hemline seasons. But if they're conservative about how much knee they care to show, they have en- thusiastically embraced an- other of the latest in fashions the pant suit. It has been accepted almost everywhere. VANCOUVER LEADS One Montreal department store buyer said she had never seen so many feminine pants on the streets as in the six months since Paris intro- duced the co-ordinated pant suit, They are most popular in Vancouver, where casual dress is the fashion, and least 'popular in Halifax with its more conservative approach to styles. But again it's the younger crowd who are showing the most immediate enthusiasm, They get the credit for break- ing the maxim that it takes Canadians at least six months to accept a startlingly new style, The difference is that while teen-agers are buying pant sults around $25, women are paying $85 to $95 for elegant versions, said a Western buyer, And while the teens wear them outdoors, grown . ups seem to prefer them for home wear, at least in that part of the country, A Vancouver fashion writer said she believes the pant suit will be completely accepted as street wear by spring for both young and older women. A Calgary buyer was of the same opinion, She and a Regina buyer agreed that the pant suit is extremely popular already, in plaids and large checks, with the college crowd, but that it would take a while before others would summon up the courage to wear them In public. STORES PUSH PANTS One surprise was the pro- motion and prominence being given to the pant suit in most department stores across the country, A leading store in Vancouver was featuring them in every window. In Quebec City, tailleurs-panta- loons were much in evidence in a plaza sportswear depart- ment, A Winnipeg store showed several racks of .the suits. And Edmonton included eight pant suits in a brief on-the-floor fashion show of casuals, However, the stores are far from unanimous on which de- partment should handle them. They appear in the coat-and- suit department, in junior boutiques, in sportswear and even in elegant ensemble salons, A fashion dictate that seems to have been ignored by most Canadians is the tent silhou- ette, It hasn't been accepted either by teens or older women, "The tent look is only for the tall," said a Quebec buyer. 'Most French-Cana- dians are petite and on them it looks squatty." Another explanation is that store buyers across the coun- try didn't give the tent silhou- ette much play, Few coat departments bought even Small quantities. Most seem to have compromised by order- ing two or three just so they could say they stock them, SELECTION LIMITED One store in London, Ont., reported the coats were selling fairly well but it lacked a real selection of sizes and colors. A Saskatoon buyer thought the tent was a fad and had bought practically nothing in this sil- houette, Another sign of conserva- tism among buyers was the reluctance to take the plunge on, this season's fashion color range of wine tones, There were. exceptions. A Winnipeg store had a whole section of an on-floor show in WHERE SMART WOMEN SHOP grape. Calgary ran an adver- tisement for coats in grape. And Vancouver featured a series of windows with dresses, coats and accessories in "sweet grape," But in one Saskatoon store, where plum was so popular that the small stock in this color was sold out in August, the buyer didn't bother to re- peat on the color, And in most cities there was no evidence that the buyers had bought wine shades in real quantity, especially in coats, BEADS HAVEN'T ARRIVED In the New York showings for fall, beaded and glitter dresses -were the fashion for late-day and formal gowns. Perhaps It's too early to judge the Canadian market in this respect, but certainly -- the fully-beaded dress. was not prominent, even in the ex- pensive salons, The glitter Interest was con- fined to glitter-woven fabrics. Several stores were fairly well-stocked in short dresses --almost shifis--with metallic gold or silver threads, That Canadians like what they iike regardiess oi ine fashion world was evident in _fur-trimmed coats. This year r] they hi to be In style but many "sale they sell more fur-trimmed coats than any other every year, 'Nevertheless, there were en: couraging words for those who wonder about te taste of Ca- nadian women, A buyer in a chic London salon said that in the six years since she came to Canada from Europe she has seen Canadian women move from a basic taste to a quite sophisticated and ele- gant outlook on fashion, DISHES RANK EVEN Washing dishes and typewrit+ ing use the same amount of en- ergy, 70 calories an hour, Think Mink -- Think Mink -- Think = think oe j mink" } | MINK { Stoles ~- Boleros --- Jackets, { TUXEDO { | RENTALS 4 Sargeants H RENTALS.
