1Q. THE OSHAWA TIMES, Fridey, November 11,1966 Knudson Keeps Lead Despite Palmer Bid By TED SMITS Associated Press Sports Editor TOKYO (AP)--George Knud- son of Canada, a handsome golfing ambassador who shot a sensational, record-breaking 64 Thursday, slipped behind Arno!d Palmer of the United States in the second round of the Canada Cup today and then surged back into the lead again with birdies on the 16th and 17th holes, Knudson's 36-32 gave him 68 for the day and a 36-hole total of 182. Palmer shot 34-33--67 which with his 66 of Thursday made his score 133. Par for the 6,962-yard hilly course is 72, Tied for third in individual honors were Lu Liang-huan of Nationalist China with 67-68-- 135 and Hideyo Sugimoto of Ja- pan, the local club pro, who shot 36-33--69 to go with his 66 of Thursday. The United States took over the team lead from Canada by virtue. of Jack Nicklaus' 35-33-- 68 which gave him 187, The American team total was 270, a sensational 18 under par, Nationalist China was second with 273, followed by Australia 276, South Africa 276, Canada 278, Japan 281, Belgium 282 and Argentina 284, FOWLER SKIDS After the first round, Canada held a one-stroke lead in the team standing over four other countries. But Knudson's part- ner, 34-year-old Frank Fowler of Calgary, had a dismal time today on the greens and slipped to.a four-over-par 76 after a first round 70. Still Canada was 16 under par in its over-all showing. Close behind the individual leaders. came Harold Henning, South Africa, 69-67--136; Kel Nagle, Australia, 66-70 -- 136; Jack. Nicklaus, U.S., 69-67--136; Flory van Donck, Belgium, 69- 69--138; Chen Chiny - po, Na- tionalist China, 68-70 -- 138; Christy O'Connor, Ireland, 69-70 --139; Roberto Bernardini, Italy, 67-73 -- 140; defending champion Gary Player, South Africa, 69-71--140,. and Bruce Devlin, Australia, 69-71--140. Knudson, 29-year-old native of Winnipeg who now is a teaching pro at a Toronto coun- try club, was tied with Palmer and Nagle after 27 holes with scores of 100, Palmer forged ahead with 33 on the back nine, with three birdies and a one-over-par, but Knudson' nlaving hehind him, birdied the par "4 and 5 16th and 17th and-then 'saved the day on the 18th by sinking a tricky, twisting uphill putt of 12 feet, IT'S THE GREATEST "That's the greatest putt I made all day," he chortled. "But I think the key shot was on the llth, a par 3, when my three iron from the tee carried well beyond the green. I man- aged to chip 40 feet to within one foot of the pin, and then sank it." Palmer took over the lead on the 17th only to lose it to Knud- son's brilliant finish. He was on the green on the par 5, 510-yard hole with his driver and a five iron, then just missed a 25-foot putt but tapped the ball in for a birdie, Nicklaus, too, birdied the hole, reaching the green with a driver and seven iron and then two--putting for the birdie, Palmer scored a deuce on the OSHAWA BOWLING NEWS motes city B ae LEAGUE Team mere: fC 's Men's Wear 20; Bane liars mer" Angus Graydon 4a Riviere MMaretyiing 13; Nu-Way Rug 10; People's Clothing 10; yt hl Flor- by 9; Jury and Lovell 7; ernaghan 4; Modern m Upholteing 2 5 doubles: Monnie Hubbell (738, 237), Lillian tiaywurd ey (322); Helen Gourile 429 Stovin 243; Nan Bennett % gg Black 228; Elleen sy Radaad Flo Willlamson 212, Marion Ox q Seve 3: cin bo te int's Parts 1, Durnos 3, Soch's 1, Roger's 3, Tumey's efeming's 1, Dines Goch's 1, Henrys % Triples reame and Tonkin 166, A.
