MOLNER, MD Dear Dr. Molner: Is there a way to relieve heavy callus on the ball of the foot other than by having it removed? I have treatment every month but a week later it feels as bad again. --Mrs. K. C, Such a callus indicates ab- | normal pressure. You can keep on having it removed indefi- nitely, but unless the conditions which cause it are remedied, the callus will form again. A different shoe style or arch support may change the point at which the pressure occurs. A factor often overlooked is ex- cessive weight. Reduction may be in order. A callus need not be removed unless it causes discomfort. It is, however, an exact indication of where pressure is greatest. (The same applies to corns). Dear Dr. Molner: My husband of three months (he is 51) says he read that a man "shortens his life' with too-frequent sexual relations. Is this true or is he joking?--Mrs. W. W. L. I can't say whether he is joking, but what he says is not true. For a healthy man, fre- quency of'sexual activity has no Sh on his health or length of life, Dear Dr. Molner: I've always heard that cracking one's knuckles makes them big. have the habit, What physical damage results?--J. C. L, The cracking does no harm and will not enlarge the knuckles. It's a sort of novelty that when a person who happens to have joint capsules of a certair looseness discovers he can crack or pop them. It soon be- comes a habit--one that can be oot aN | ating tine 9 gl THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, November 3, 1966 27> al BRIDGE * By B. If you now cash th A-Q of diamonds and then cross to the ed of spades in the hope of taking five diamond tricks, it turns out that you go down one because you score only three diamond tricks the way the suit happens to be divided, This is not particularly sur- prising, because the probability of finding the diamonds satis- factorily divided on this line of play was only 54 per cent. There was a 36 cent chance of the suit dividing 3-3, plus an 18. per cent chance of finding either opponent with the double- ton or singleton jack, However, if you cash the ace of diamonds and then overtake the queen with the king (plan« ning to lead a third round of the suit), your chance of mak+ = contract rises to 67 per cen This is largely because you retain not only the 36 per cent chance of finding the suit di- vided 3-3, but because you also make the contract when- ever either opponent was dealt the singleton jack, the J-x, or the 9x of diamonds, which is another 31 per cent. Thus, in the actual case, when East plays the niine on the king, you continue with force out the become esta' and you wind up making exactly nine tricks on the hand, . The tournament, to run Jan. 1-6, will consist of six gamés involving Canada's national team and invited teams from © |Russia, the United States and & | Czechoslovakia. Shoes my a nuisance to those around you. Keeping this in mind should help you stop it. Dear Dr. Molner: My grand- mother has diabetes. She is not allowed much sugar, so is it all right to give her other sweet- ners such as honsy and corn syrup?--M. 0. No, definitely not. Honey and corn syrup. are concentrated forms of sugar and she must avoid it, She can have artificial sweeteners in tea or coffee, or even in other dishes. She gets da: a certain amount of natural sugar from fruit and vegetables which are calculated in her diet as carbohydrate. Dear Dr. Molner: What about yellow jaundice in newborn babies? My first two babies did not have it, but the next two did; nevertheless they survived without after-effects. Does jaundice have anything to do with me or my husband? --Mrs, L. M. B. This suggests an Rh incom- patibility. You are one Rh type and your husband is the oppo- site, The Rh factor applies to the blood. Rh positive means that the so-called Rhesus factor is present, and Rh negative means it is absent. This is something over which you have no control. You are born one way and you stay that way. But when parents have opposite Rh factors it can cause difficulty in babies. With the first baby (some- times the second) there may be no trouble because the mother has not become sensitized. In later pregnancies there can be trouble, so your Rh factors should be checked. Sometimes it is necessary to drain away the baby's blood and give it a transfusion of a different type. CTV will carry the following three games live on its national television network: Jan. 1, Canada - Czechoslo- vakia; Jan, 4, Russia-Czecho- slovakia; Jan. 6, Russia-Can- ada, ~ Warrendale Probe Will Be In Secret TORONTO (CP)--The provin- ciai inquiry ints the operations of the Warrendale treatment centre for emotionally disturbed children, rocked earlier this year by the resignation of its staff, will be held behind closed doors, it was announced Tues- y. Dr. J. C, Rathbun, chairman of the four-man inquiry com- mittee, said he expects to sub- mit a report to Health Minister Dymond before the end of this year. The committee had met for preliminary discussions. It was appointed in the wake of the provincial take-over early in September of Warrendale. Dr. Rathbun said the private hearings are "'in the interest of the children involved." SALLY'S SALLIES
