Time of the goal was 27 seconds. Lavender made it 4-1 at the 14.40 mark, as he tipped in a pass from Reid. Then what has to be the pret- tiest goal seen in the Whitby arena in several years came off the stick of Reid, He did wonders with the puck and brought a well-deserved round of applause the "RB" hockey game. The big bread - aid - builer line of Paul Reid, Tommy Lavender and Peter Vipond once again showed the way, picking up a total of 11 scor- ing points, Reid had three goals and one helper, with Lavender clicking for . one marker and three assists, and Vipond picked up three assists. The final period was unique -- the winners scored three in succession, to make the score 7-1 and then Tony's struck back, to show that the 1966 champions have still got some- thing left--scoring three them- selves, to finish the game in a whirlwind manner. Tripp and Redshaw each scored a pair for the winners with Konorowski, Norris and Dick adding singles. Tran got a couple for Tony's with Dowe and Bobbie getting their other two goals. For 13 minutes Saturday night at Oshawa Civic Auditorium, Oshawa Generals' goalkeeper, Ian Young didn't have a friend he could count on. Fortunately, for Generals, Young was letter perfect for the 13 minutes holding Peter- borough TPT Petes scoreless, although they fired 21 shots di- rectly at the goal. Generals, who acted like tame tabbies for the first 20 minut- es, roared like wild lions the rest of the way, scoring three times in the final seven min- utes to chalk up a 5-3 Ontario Hockey Association Juntor 'a' League victory before 2,285 spe- ctators, Three times, Generals fell be- hind, twice on their own mis- plays, but they came back each time to tie the score, and fin- ally forged ahead on a_bilis- tering screened shot by defen- ceman Chris Roberts, on a pass from Chris Hayes, making his first start of the season, Hayes also made the play to set up the tying goal by Peter Nevin, which came with Petes playing two men short and Gen- erals one, 22 seconds before Roberts' tally. Hayes passed from behind the Peterborough net to Nevin, who was foiled by goalkeeper Brian Caley, On rebound, however, Nevin lifted the puck over the fallen goalie. Other Oshawa goals were scored by Bill Little, Bill Scott and George Babcock. Joe John- ston, John Vanderburg and Mic- key Redmond scored for Petes. In the first period, Petes out- skated, outbumped and outhust- led the Generals but couldn't beat Young, who slid, dived, leaped and grabbed at. every- thing in sight. Generals had three good scor- ing opportunities jn the first seven minutes as Caley stop- ped Little and Bill White and Brian Morenz hit the post with a wide open net in front of him but Petes held control the rest of th way. Young took sure goals away from Alex Cambell, Mickey Redmond twice, Norm Tucker and Vanderburg as Petes roam- ed at will in front of the goal. Late in the period, Vander- burg scooted around the Gen- erals' defence to break in but Young stopped him on one side and then slid across to stop Mickey Redmond's shot off the rebound, wins: ~ fd just got it. If the puck had ot orb it would have caromed off the the post or cross-bar. BLACK HAWKS regained the top rung of the ladder last night when they turned back the Generals 4-2, We didn't see this one but we hear that St. Catharines were the better team, all the way, but had a rough time proving the point. <Generals had only six shots on goal in the first period and just five in the second stanza, They did much better in the 'final frame but wilted badly and were outscored two-to- 'yothing, as the homesters established thelr victory margin. Tdle on Saturday night, the young Hawks were rested and waiting for the Generals. St. Kitts may have been too anx- ous -- as Generals grabbed a 2-0 lead in less than three "Yninutes -- but they never did score again and the homesters 'game back in determined fashion to earn their win. LONDON NATIONALS climbed out of the Junior 'A' "Gellar with an upset win -- they came up with their best performance of the season for coach "Turk" Broda to win one that would be especially pleasing to him -- a win (4-2) 'aver Toronto Marlboros, right in Maple Leaf Gardens, Sur- veying the weekend results, in the current standings, we find Montreal Canadiens on the bottom with four points -- all on tie games, The game between Hamilton and Canadiens was postponed, due to NBA basketball action in Montreal. Generals are now tied with Red Wings for second place, with nine points apiece, but Oshawa has played one more game. tchener tied Niagara Falls, to move one point ahead of "Petes," who are in fifth place, with seven points. Wiyers and Marlies each have six points while next-to-last London has five. ockey came from It took Whitby some time to Johnston was credited with the first goal when his attemp- ted pass was kickéd into the net by Little, who was trying to steer the puck past the net, Coach Ted O'Connor shook up his lines when the Petes, Hugh Harris took a penalty at 9.40, benching Scott in favor of Little. The move paid off as Little tipped in Paul Cadieux blue- line blast to tie the score. Vanderburg, with Cadieux in the penalty box at the start of the third period, sent Petes ahead with a 35 footer but Scott teamed with Gerry Dionne and Cadieux to tie the score at 6.11 with each team a man short. Mickey Redmond intercepted a wayward pass by Jim Whit- taker to move in and beat Young with a shot between the pads but a minor and 10-min- ute misconduct penalties to Steve Hunt of Petes, follow- ing majors to Johnston and There were goals galore as the UAW Hockey League open- ed its 1966-67 season on Sun- day morning at the Civic Audi- torium, with president Fred Loscombe supervising the pro- ceedings. In the opening game, Starr Furniture scored the first goal of the game, Vic Georgeff beat- ing goalie Gary Hooper, just before the five-minute mark, but after that Hooper, aided by fine protection, was unabeat- able and the new entry, Cable TV roared back to take a 91 decision, Stan Westfall with three goals and assist and Ron Wright, with three assists and one goal, were the pace-setters for the win- ners with Gary Copeland, Glas- pell, Peters, Al Myles and Prest all adding one, to round out the total, Starr held Cable to only one goal in a well-played second stanza but faded hadly in the final frame. LOCAL SPORT FANS who watched the Boston-Toronto me on TV Saturday night got a real thrill when Bobby z almost snared the hero's mantle, with Eddie Shack in the penalty box and just a little over a minute to play. Orr's fine shot from the right side of the blue-line had goalie 'Bruce Gamble beaten -- but the puck was just about two inches too high -- it glanced off the top of the cross-bar. 'Bruins were whomped 8-1 in Detroit last night and the win 'was enough to vault Red Wings from the bottom of the heap to a tie for third spot, with Leafs, Gordie Howe's first goal 'of the season was one of the eight.
