In fact -- in the late 1800's, 'wind -up- machines teld the same precedence as today's radio, television and Hi-Fi. But all things must eventually yield to tomorrow and the art of the music box, is all but gone. Thomas.Bouckley of 12 King St, W., is trying to preserve some of that art. "I now have over 30 music boxes, at least 10 gramophones and one machine -- the fore- runner to the juke box -- too heavy for one person to carry," said Mr. Bouckley. "On the 4th of July, six years ago, I saw two music boxes be- ing packed into American cars -- I decided to see how many I could keep in the country," he said, Part of the collection is on display in the music room at McLaughlin Public Library. Tlie oldest of these dates back to approximately 1820. "It's very difficult to esti- mate an exact date or age of a machine," said Mr. Bouckley. The earlier machines used a key wound mechanism, but by 1840 the ratchet-wind was de- veloped. "The mechanism is covered with a glass panel to pretect it from dust, and a hand written list of tunes it played was at- tached to the inside of the lid," said Mr. Boukley. By 1870, the increased de- mand for lower priced ma- chines resulted in the develop- ment of the disc-type instru- ment, which was a perforated metal disc and could be stamp- ed out quickly and cheaply. "These machines also had double combs for increased vol- said Mr. Bouckley. "The perforations in the dise activated the tuned teeth of the comb on much the same prin- ciple that the player piano works," he said. The making of the music box became a flourishing industry in Switzerland and secrets of the craft were passed on from generation to generation. "In many of the Swiss fam- ilies, each member became an expert in some branch of the ume," said Mr. Bouckley. "The men made the gears, tuned combs and. marked off the cylinders for placement of pins. The women drilled the holes for the pins and pushed them into the cylinder," he said. The Swiss craftsmanship re- sulted in perfecting the dise machine, but its manufacture in Switzerland was short, the heart of the swiss was in the cylinder machine. From the Swiss, large auto- matic coin-operated machines became the juke boxes of the gay nineties. But by the beginning of the 20th century, the music box era came to an end and was re- placed by Thomas Edison's fa- mous phonograph. "The big difference was that a music box produced its own sound and the gramophone pro- duced sounds -- it was known as the talking machine," Mr. Bouckley said.
