MOLNER, MD Dear Dr. Molner: What are the advantages, if any, of giving cola drinks to one- and two- year-olds? I see so many young mothers feeding it to their little ones, especially if they are suf- fering from c} vomiting spell.-- I don't believe in giving cola drinks io youngsters, 'and i've eaid so before. There are plenty of other fluids that are better for them -- fruit juice, milk, There are some reasons for giving carbonated drinks to children with a vomiting spell, A child becomes very quickly so it is important to replace liquid in the system, Carbonated drinks are helpful because they are a tasty way of getting the child to drink fluids; there is a supply of sugar in the drinks, and after a vomiting spell a child has need of some quick energy; the carbonated drinks also often help allay the feeling of nausea. Note that I say carbonated drinks, but not particularly cola drinks, Ginger ale or other flavors may be used because they do not, like the colas, con- tain caffein, which is a stimu- Also keep this in mind in such circumstances: Use regular carbonated drinks because they contain sugar; do not use the low-calorie ones--not that these brands would do any harm, but lacking sugar they would not provide the energy. Dear Dr. Molner: I've just moved into the sixth decade and keep telling myself that is what makes me aware of occa- sional pains in my feet and legs. I have varicose veins and ra- ACROSS 2.By 19. H. A. No, I wouldn't be alarmed, but if you are so intent on "rationalizing," how about try- ing a different rationale? ~ Try this for size: Aches andj | pains are not inevitable as we grow older, and the sixth dec- ade isn't old. But our organs and tissues do become gradually more creaky. Varicose veins impair circula- tion, and faulty circulation is a known cause of leg pains. I wouldn't"be alarmed; I'd just take precautions. Dear Dr. Molner: I have my children bathe both before going to bed and when they arise. Can this be considered too much?--R. J. D. No, It's good hygiene. For just- one of many possible ex- amples, take the problem of pinworms. If children have pin- worms, they can get eggs on their fingers at night, and spread them around after they arise. Note to Mrs. M. W.: It some- times is possible to repair the Fallopian tubes after they have 'yeen tied, but frequently the attempt does not succeed. There is no way to recover, so you wind up going down one. _ If you have a sympathetic partner, he will commeserate with you all right but be ad- vised that such partners are ex- tremely hard to find. He is much more likely to point out to you, in unmistakable lang- uage, that you could have You can't argue with him, because you know he is right. At the time you were playing the hand, the thought of lead- ing a heart probably flitted through your mind, but you dismissed it because of the pos- sibilty that West's original heart lead may have been made from a short suit headed by the six. To play spades at that seemed less dangerous, ei But now that you have a chance to think the matter over fully, you realize that you made your mistake even earlier. What you should have done after win- ning the diamond in dummy with the jack was to lead the A-K of spades to see how the spades were divided. Had you done this, you would have dis- covered the 5-1 break in time to make the contact. Broncos Drop - Veteran Rote DENVER, Colo.
