(CP Photo) Labor Unrest Causes Cited SARNIA (CP)--The steadily- increasing cost of living, the in- flation that will accompany it and the fear of the unknown th technological Lat in industry were cited Tuesday night as some of the sure causes continued unrest in labor in ' Judge Hugh C. Arrell, of Hamilton, Westworth County|' hon al and family court, ad- sing the Sarhia and District Labour Council said the '"sec- ondary changes" which will oc- cur through technological ad- vances in industry which have "not even been considered yet" may have more far-reaching ef- fects than some people think. + He said it was time labor un- jons started thinking more of the "social utilities' than of the strictly materialistic things. He said that in Ontario "we seem to have failed in the hu- manities noting they build much better homes today . . . but we don't seem to be able to keep families together." MP for Northumberland, was speaking to the Toronto Broad- view Conservative Association. » He said Dominion Bureau of Statistics figures showed the in- dex of industrial production de- clined 0.8 per cent in July--the third consecutive monthly de- cline. . "These figures indicate the achange which is taking place in 'our economy and that the pros- perity which we have been en- 'joying during the past five | years appears to be approach- ing the end of the road," he said. Mr. Hees said Canada was in , the same kind of situation now , 'as it had been in 1957 when Dr. '30. J. Firestone, economic ad- lviser to the government of the | day, warned a business reces- sion was likely to follow if the government refused to reverse its tight money policy. "That warning was followed by a recession which lasted 314 years." SUGGESTS REMEDY Mr. Hees said the government must take the following steps to counter a decline in the coun- try's economy: Increase the supply of ' skilled workers by an ex- panded immigration program until training facilities in Can- ada can produce enough tech- nically trained young men and * women io imcct the growing demands of industry. --Expand technical training school facilities to meet yearly needs for skilled workers. * =--Make industrial loans available at reasonable rates of interest so that Canadian producers can expand produc- tion to meet the growing de- mand for goods, both at home and in the export market.
