Horticulturists with the Ontario Departm of Agriculture and Food offer sev- eral suggestions on the means of providing the neces- sary protection for the cold months ahead. In nearly all sections of On- tario, some type of rose protec- tion is necessary to prevent loss during winter. The degree of protection required will vary in different localities, depending on temperature extremes, wind intensity, and snowfall. Even within the individual garden, some roses may require mvic protection than others if they are situated in an exposed loca- tion. One common method is "banking" the rose bushes. Draw the soil around the bases of the plants to eight of several inches. It is advisable to acquire extra soil for this Vegetables Can Be Many vegetables can be stored and kept fresh for en- joyment throughout the winter. Specialists with the Horticul- ture Department, Ontario Agri- cultural College, University of Guelph, suggest ways you can lengthen the life of your gar- den produce. Different vege- tables require different storage conditions, and now is the) time to ensure that these re- quirements are provided. Most home basements are fairly dry and ey gree a es perature of 55 to 65 degrees F'. Only a few types of produce uch as pumpkins, squash, and tomatoes will store well under these conditions, The pumpkins and squash to be stored should be fully mature and must be carefully handled to 'prevent bruising. Tomatoes in danger of frost in the garden will ripen well in the basement. Spread them out in shallow trays or on a table, and in- spect them frequently. Discard any tomatoes which rot or dry out. Beans, peas, and popcorn re quire a cool, dry location. An best}snow which gives excellent | ment \ Ontario. += / procedure, as drawing soil from. the area around the plants may leave roots. After the is frozen, it is beneficial to add a covering layer of strawy manure or leaves. Evergreen boughs placed over the covering will help to trap natural protection. oa Climbing roses also need win-| ter protection. A suggested method is to remove the climb- ers from the supports and tie the canes together. Lay them on the ground and attach the end to a stake. Cover the plants entirely with soil and add ever- green boughs. As an alterna- tive, the canes may be left PEELING CEILING QUESTION: The heavy rains came before our new roof was completed. The rain came in one room and now the ceiling peels badly.\Beside scraping, is there anything else to do be- fore repainting the ceiling? ANSWER: Very bad luck about the roof; too bad the builder couldn't have covered the unfinished part with build- er's sheet plastic, Would have been easy and an effective waterproofer. Take it very gently and'easy with any scrap- ing; really better to wait a couple of months to see if the ceiling plaster will dry out thoroughly and continue adher- ing to its lath. The less you distrub it now the bettes the chance of not dislodging it. The peas and beans should be kept in polyethylene bags or glass jars after shelling, Pop- corn may either be left on the cob or shelled. Shelled corn should be kept in an air-tight) volume. Putting in a pressure-| container to maintain moisture content. A basement storage area, |constructed to allow regulation of temperature and humidity, is suggested for storage of beets, carrots, parsnips, cab- bage, and onions. These vege- tables require a storage tem- perature as near to 32 degrees F. as possible, and a high humidity level. Potatoes re- quire a constant temperature of) 40 degrees F. If the tempera-| ture is any lower, spoilage will) occur. That's the kind of bargain you get with scity. Low-cost electricity has hundreds more uses today than it had back in 1906 when hydro first began. Yet, surprisingly enough, it costs less now than it did then. As a matter Of fact, you pay less for electrical power here in Ontario than you would almost anywhere else in the world. Any way you figure it, electricity is the biggest bargain in your family budget.
